Neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) is a psychological approach that involves analyzing strategies used by successful individuals and applying them to reach a personal goal. It relates thoughts, language, and patterns of behavior learned through experience to specific outcomes.
Amazing how such subtle uses of language can make such difference to the results you get.
"Frogs Into Princes" three-part introduction to NLP (short for "Neuro Linguistic Programming"), a form of therapy conceived of in the 1970s. NLP is founded on the premise that "the kinds of problems that people have usually have nothing to do with content; they have to do with the structure, the form of how they organize their experience." (47) The central thesis of NLP, then, is that the best way to help others overcome emotional, behavior, and psychosomatic problems is to discern the processes by which they organize and access their thoughts and feeling and alter it.
The meaning that any event has depends upon the "frame" in which we perceive it. When we change the frame, we change the meaning. Reframing is not new. Reframing appears widely in the therapeutic process. An "all-purpose" method of reframing, called "six step" reframing, was developed by Bandler and Grinder, and already appears in print in Frogs Into Princes. What is new in this book is an explicit description of the basic structures of reframing, and the presentation of several additional models of reframing. This book presents specific step-by-step techniques to implement these models, as well as ways to determine which model is most appropriate for a particular problem situation.
This volume is the first in a series of studies of the patterns of hypnotic techniques employed by Milton H. Erickson. In this first volume, we have focused primarily on the verbal patterns which Erickson uses in his work. Furthermore, our emphasis here has been on the portions of his work dealing with the induction of trance and the use of suggestion for assisting the client in accomplishing the objectives of trance work. We intend to shift the emphasis of the furture volumes to other patterns. The Table of Contents which we include for Volume II of Patterns will give the reader some notion of this future emphasis. By R. Bandler
If you want to know how hypnosis really works (and, no, it has nothing to do with waving of hands or other similar nonsense), you will want to read this book. If you want to know the "magic" behind Ericksonian techniques and Neuro-Linguistic Programming, you have to read this book. From one of the true masters of hypnotherapy, this is one book that can really change your life!!
Thomas Jefferson once said, "If two individuals get together and exchange a dollar, they each walk away with one dollar. If the same individuals get together and exchange an idea, they both walk away with two ideas." In many ways, this statement expresses the vastly generative potential or "economics" of modeling.
Modeling is the process of taking a complex event or phenomenon and breaking it into small enough chunks so that it can be recapitulated or applied in some way. Behavioral modeling involves observing and mapping the successful processes which underlie an exceptional performance of some type. The purpose of behavior modeling is to create a pragmatic map or 'model' of a particular behavior which can be used to reproduce or simulate some aspect of that performance by anyone who is motivated to do so.
The ability to model effectively opens the door to many possibilities that have previously been unavailable to humankind. In addition to providing a methodology which can be used to make ideas more explicit and easier to communicate, modeling can transform the way we view and perceive one another. If we see someone who does something better than ourselves, for example, instead of looking at that person and feeling inadequate, jealous, or suspicious, we can go out and model how they do what they do. Then, we too can have the capability that the other person possesses.
The field of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) has developed out of the modeling of the behaviors and thinking processes of exceptional people from many fields. NLP modeling procedures involve finding out about the mental strategies ("Neuro") a person is using by analyzing that person's language patterns ("Linguistic") and non-verbal responses. The results of this analysis are then put into step-by-step strategies or procedures ("Programming") that may be used to transfer the skill to other people, and apply it to other contexts. The purpose of NLP modeling is to put what ha with which to identify and describe specific, reproducible patterns in the language and behavior of effective role models. The purpose of NLP modeling is to put what has been observed and described into action in a way that is productive and enriching. In fact, the worldwide success of NLP as a technology for creating and managing change comes from its foundation in the modeling process.
This book is about the NLP modeling process and its applications. The first part of this book is devoted to defining the principles and tools necessary for effective modeling (the "epistemology," methodology and technology of NLP). The second part of the book illustrates the application of NLP modeling procedures to the study of effective leadership. It provides examples of how NLP was applied to identify specific cognitive, linguistic and behavioral skills used by leaders to address challenging situations involving problem solving, delegation and training on the job. The results define the key communication and relational skills employed by effective leaders to achieve practical results in their working reality, in order to "create a world to which people want to belong.
Rich with humor and metaphors from other cultures and disciplines, Turtles develops the characteristics common to the geniuses whose patterning formed the initial body of NLP techniques. You will learn how these skills are readily available for cultivating your own personal genius in a way that is respectful of the power of the unconscious.
This book is the documentary, with added notes and stories, of Grinder/Delozier's five day seminar called "Prerequisites To Personal Genius". John Grinder and Judith Delozier get their participants to think about the structure of thinking; how our thought patterns become our beliefs about reality. The limitations of those thought patterns can be overcome, however, when a person is able to expand his/her perceptual filters and model "geniuses" -- this is the process which has been shown in the lives of people such as Einstein, Milton Erickson, and Gregory Bateson.
Throughout the book, the authors challenge you to reexamine the structures of your "mind" and the ways that all parts can be integrated in an internal dance.

All of the material inclded in this book is based on the work of Richard Bandler. Of Richard and his teaching, I am reminded of a passage from the Tao te Ching The sage does not hoard. Having bestowed all he has on othrs, he has yet more. (Translated by C.D. Lau, Penguin, 1969) In Preparing the text, I have drawn extensively on workshop transcripts in which Richard was teaching the concepts and practices of sub-modality usage. We make movies in our minds-that's how we think. Yet we do more, we represent the world as we see, hear, and sense it and set cinematic frames on them. NLP got it wrong, these cinematic frames are not sub-modalities, they are meta-level frames. Sub-Modalities Going Meta is an advanced NLP book that uses Neuro-SemantIcs to continue to discover the structure of experience and re-model NLP with the Meta-States model. <CR> Discover the secrets of sub-modalities and their meta nature <CR>Discover the semantic nature of our cinematic frames <CR>Discover how to powerfully use cinematic frames for transformation <CR>Learn how to effectively use semantically loaded meta-frames (sub-modalities) <CR>Disconfirm limiting Beliefs and install empowering Beliefs <CR>Set meta-frames for accelerating your learning and understanding <CR>Marvel at the magic of structure in the relationship between cinematic features and meaning
