1 01:00:04,920 --> 01:00:14,920 One of the things that I personally have been doing over the last year or so is that 00:30.000 --> 00:36.240 the last 15 years or so is traveling around the United States and looking at crop circles. 00:36.240 --> 00:43.240 I am the director of an organization called the Independent Crop Circle Researchers Association. 00:43.240 --> 00:50.240 Archeology is sort of my second hobby. In looking at crop circles throughout the United 00:51.280 --> 00:58.280 States, we find that crop circles don't appear anywhere and everywhere, but crop circles 00:58.680 --> 01:05.680 tend to appear in conjunction with certain contextual features in the landscape. Over 01:08.280 --> 01:15.280 95 percent of the crop circle formations that we've looked at in the Midwest appear 01:15.280 --> 01:22.280 with three things in the landscape. They appear near power lines, and in 85 percent of the 01:23.280 --> 01:30.280 cases, the formations that we surveyed, the closest pole, telephone pole, whatever, to 01:33.080 --> 01:37.460 the crop circle has a transformer box on it. Not all power line poles have transformer 01:37.460 --> 01:44.460 boxes on it, but an overwhelming correlation seems to find those near to where crop circles 01:45.240 --> 01:52.240 form. Second thing that we find is that crop circles appear in close conjunction with water. 01:52.480 --> 01:59.480 A creek, a pond, a drainage ditch, right over the top of an aquifer. Our last speaker, 02:03.120 --> 02:10.120 Glenn Broughton, actually probably was the one that first discovered that idea. He made 02:11.280 --> 02:17.840 a map of crop circle formations in England in the early 1990s, which showed that all 02:17.840 --> 02:24.840 the crop circles were located along what's known as the green sand aquifer. That became 02:26.800 --> 02:32.660 a very important clue as to what may be going on with crop circles. 02:32.660 --> 02:36.020 The third thing is that crop circles seem to appear on the down slope or the bottom 02:36.020 --> 02:42.060 of a hill or the lowest point of the field. The vast majority of crop circles do that. 02:42.060 --> 02:46.400 In this case, this is the drainage area of the down slope of the hill. This crop circle 02:46.800 --> 02:52.360 actually was up in Canada that I investigated a few years ago. It had all of these pictured 02:52.360 --> 02:59.360 nicely all in one place. The fourth correlation, which is pretty high, is that 65 percent 03:01.060 --> 03:07.360 of the crop circle formations have been located very close to Native American mounds and earthworks 03:07.360 --> 03:12.920 or ancient archeological sites. We think that number is actually higher because so many 03:13.240 --> 03:20.240 mounds have been obliterated over the course of time. This piece right here is what we're 03:20.760 --> 03:27.760 going to talk about going forward here for the next few minutes. 03:28.640 --> 03:32.800 Some people here may know from listening to Freddie's talk or listening to Glenn and 03:32.800 --> 03:37.400 Cameron or just your own general knowledge about crop circles is that the greatest number 03:37.480 --> 03:44.480 of crop circles every year that are reported are in southern England amid a landscape of 03:44.480 --> 03:51.480 earthworks such as Avebury, Silbury Hill, Stonehenge, Carbary Castle, and many, many 03:51.480 --> 03:56.740 others. It turns out that the greatest number of crop circles reported in the United States 03:56.740 --> 04:02.160 each year also are being located amidst an ancient landscape of earthworks. Places like 04:02.480 --> 04:09.000 Scyp Mound, the Great Miamisburg Mound, Serpent Mound, Fort Hill, and many, many others here. 04:09.000 --> 04:13.680 The highest concentration of crop circles reported has actually been in the state of 04:13.680 --> 04:20.680 Ohio, in the Ohio Valley around where these earthworks are located. This particular crop 04:20.840 --> 04:25.720 circle, which we'll get to near the end, was very close to this Native American earthwork 04:25.720 --> 04:29.680 known as Scyp Mound and we'll talk about that later. 04:29.680 --> 04:36.200 Just to show you the similarities between the landscape in England and the landscape 04:36.200 --> 04:41.920 here, here's a picture of Silbury Hill, which is the largest intact man-made earthwork in 04:41.920 --> 04:47.360 all of Europe, and the Miamisburg Mound, which is not the largest of the earthworks, but 04:47.360 --> 04:54.360 the largest in the state of Ohio. They're roughly similar in terms of shape and form. 04:55.200 --> 05:01.000 Stonehenge, we've heard a number of things about Stonehenge this weekend. It's been 05:01.000 --> 05:04.920 built with astronomical alignments and code in it, and of course we just talked heavily 05:04.920 --> 05:10.600 about Scyp Mound and its astronomical alignments. But very similar sorts of ideas and concepts 05:10.600 --> 05:14.240 in terms of the earthworks and stuff. One of the things that people don't really recognize 05:14.240 --> 05:21.240 about Stonehenge is the outer earthwork portion of it. You can see the circle and the avenue 05:21.560 --> 05:28.040 there. We see these kinds of large geometric earthwork circles and squares and octagons 05:28.040 --> 05:32.440 throughout the Ohio Valley. 05:32.440 --> 05:36.360 Just like in the first part of the talk, we used Serpent Mound as sort of a case study 05:36.360 --> 05:41.440 for our understanding of what's going on with these ancient sites. We're going to use this 05:41.440 --> 05:48.200 crop circle formation as sort of our keystone to understanding what the connection may be 05:48.280 --> 05:54.120 between the crop circles and these ancient sites. This crop circle appeared literally 05:54.120 --> 06:01.120 across the street from Serpent Mound back in 2003. In the landscape here, here's Serpent 06:03.960 --> 06:07.840 Mound, here's Brush Creek, and if you remember the map, Brush Creek turns around and comes 06:07.840 --> 06:14.080 this direction, and Serpent Mound is right here, right on the top of that escarpment. 06:14.080 --> 06:18.240 There's a spring right over here, there are power lines. This, of course, is inside 06:18.240 --> 06:22.280 the crater, probably the only crop circle that's ever been reported inside a meteorite 06:22.280 --> 06:29.280 crater. One of the things that we know about this is that it's definitely not man-made. 06:34.440 --> 06:41.080 We did extensive scientific testing in this particular crop circle. I'm, again, a scientist 06:41.080 --> 06:46.840 by trade, so we go out and look at crop circles, and we do a bunch of different scientific 06:46.840 --> 06:53.440 tests on them. We will measure for the magnetic field strength, we will measure for the electric 06:53.440 --> 06:59.320 field strength, we'll measure for radioactivity, we will look at radio and microwave emissions, 06:59.320 --> 07:05.040 we will examine the plant structure to see if there are any changes to the plants. Sometimes 07:05.040 --> 07:10.440 we'll look at the magnetic content of the soil, and in this case, we can check the 07:10.440 --> 07:16.840 box on each one of those. I'm not going to go into all of the detail here. You can 07:16.840 --> 07:23.720 actually get this off of the ICCRA.org website. You can download a little PDF of the findings 07:23.720 --> 07:30.720 from the Serpent Mound crop circle, but all of this is just indicating that we found 07:31.200 --> 07:36.840 changes in the area of the crop circle, the flattened plants area, versus what we found 07:36.840 --> 07:43.840 outside of that in the field. One of the other things that we look at when we study crop 07:43.920 --> 07:50.920 circles is this was actually discovered by somebody that people may know in this audience. 07:52.960 --> 07:59.960 How many people remember Dr. Gerald Hawkins? Anybody? A handful of people. Dr. Gerald Hawkins 08:00.720 --> 08:07.720 importantly back in the early 1970s was the guy that figured out all of the astronomical 08:09.760 --> 08:16.760 alignments encoded at Stonehenge. He wrote several books about that. In his later years, 08:17.000 --> 08:23.600 he started looking at crop circles. One of the things that he found was that if there 08:23.600 --> 08:30.600 are a series of circles in the field of different sizes, you can take the diameter, measure 08:30.600 --> 08:35.880 the diameter of one and divide it into another and you can get a mathematical ratio. Those 08:35.880 --> 08:41.600 mathematical ratios weren't just any kind of ratio. They were very specific. They were 08:41.600 --> 08:48.600 diatonic ratios. Anybody know what a diatonic ratio is? It goes back to Pythagoras. 08:50.600 --> 08:56.500 Diatonic ratios are essentially today known as the musical intervals of the notes on 08:56.500 --> 09:03.500 a keyboard. As you go from C to D, D to E, E to F, you get a series of notes. Superman 09:04.140 --> 09:10.140 actually encoded several diatonic ratios in it and you could play those notes on a scale. 09:10.140 --> 09:15.980 I didn't put the video in here, but if you go out to YouTube, just type in Superman 09:15.980 --> 09:22.980 crop circle, you'll get a video of my colleague Ted Robertson playing those notes on a harpsichord 09:23.300 --> 09:28.340 of both this crop circle and this crop circle, which came down right near the Miami's 09:28.340 --> 09:32.980 Bird Mountain, which I just showed a picture of on a previous slide. You can listen to 09:32.980 --> 09:39.980 those after you leave here today. We've seen some of these geometric symbols, some of 09:42.780 --> 09:49.780 these ancient knowledge symbols incorporated into the designs of crop circles around the 09:50.780 --> 09:57.780 world. This particular one is encoding certain geometric principles in it. Ross mentioned 09:58.500 --> 10:04.220 that the Superman encoded the vesicle pisces. Well, Superman also incorporates the vesicle 10:04.220 --> 10:09.380 pisces. You can see that right here. It also incorporates a little known figure known 10:09.380 --> 10:16.380 as the vesicula, which is this figure here. This is on a ratio of 4 to 1.0717968. You 10:16.700 --> 10:23.700 have both of these ratios incorporated into the design of the central portion of it to 10:26.460 --> 10:33.460 kind of create that sort of cat's eye image of the central area. You can also use that 10:36.940 --> 10:43.220 two crescent circle in understanding higher mathematics. The vesicle pisces, for instance, 10:43.220 --> 10:47.780 incorporates the square root of 2, the square root of 3, the square root of 5, and so on. 10:47.780 --> 10:54.860 You can get higher order mathematics derived from that sacred geometry. 10:54.860 --> 11:01.060 You can also look at this design and see that it's based on the principle of that sort 11:01.060 --> 11:07.900 of flower of life geometric symbol. You're seeing step by step the stages of what you 11:07.900 --> 11:13.660 would consider to be the geometric lessons as you go along, as you incorporate your 11:13.660 --> 11:20.660 understanding of these geometric principles. You can look at various components of this 11:20.860 --> 11:27.860 particular crop circle design. One specific one is this crescent. This isn't just any 11:29.540 --> 11:32.400 kind of a crescent because there's a crescent right above it and there are two crescents 11:32.400 --> 11:39.000 right there. This is a very specific kind of crescent. It's called a lumula. Lumula 11:39.000 --> 11:46.000 has been known since ancient times as a tool to help you determine the positioning of 11:47.440 --> 11:54.180 stars in the sky. It's still being used today. Here's a modern one. It's called a planisphere. 11:54.180 --> 12:00.120 You can rotate it around for your day of the year and it will change the stars that are 12:00.300 --> 12:07.300 in the sky for your location. We see this sort of commonality of there's something 12:07.300 --> 12:14.300 going on here with this crop circle that's telling us to look at the sky. 12:15.460 --> 12:20.900 Cameron Broughton in the previous talk mentioned the idea of squaring the circle. She said, 12:20.900 --> 12:24.900 oh, I wish I had a picture of it. Well, here's one right here and here's another one right 12:24.900 --> 12:31.900 here. I had met a geometer who subsequently became a friend of mine. His name is Alan 12:34.180 --> 12:41.180 Brown. We were both speaking at a conference together a few years ago. Alan Brown was looking 12:43.380 --> 12:49.740 at a very specific type of crop circle in Ailin known as a Celtic cross pattern, which 12:49.740 --> 12:54.860 is essentially like five circles like on a dice. You have a little dice and you have 12:54.860 --> 13:01.860 a little five on it. Five little circles. One of the things that he found based on 13:02.260 --> 13:09.260 an idea from another crop circle researcher, Michael Glickman, was that these five circles 13:12.500 --> 13:17.980 may exhibit this idea of squaring the circle. 13:17.980 --> 13:23.180 This idea of squaring the circle is a problem that dates, it's like a philosophical problem 13:23.180 --> 13:30.180 that dates back to the time of the Egyptians at least. It's to construct a square from 13:31.540 --> 13:38.540 the perimeter distance of a circle. Now, sounds like Ross got a dog in the background. I 13:39.740 --> 13:46.740 know Ross doesn't have a dog, he has cats, so it must be from outside of his house. 13:48.980 --> 13:55.980 This figure of squaring the circle from the earliest days of the Egyptians to the modern 13:57.980 --> 14:03.100 day when Alan Brown started looking at these Celtic cross patterns in England was such 14:03.100 --> 14:10.100 that there were only six known ways of approximately squaring the circle. It turns out that pi 14:10.220 --> 14:15.060 is an irrational number, so you can't actually get an actual square, but you can get very 14:15.100 --> 14:21.620 close, better than 99% accuracy using six different methods. 14:21.620 --> 14:27.180 When Alan Brown started looking at these crop circles, Celtic cross patterns in England, 14:27.180 --> 14:34.180 which were appearing in the 1980s, he found that he could find new ways of squaring the 14:34.340 --> 14:41.340 circle that had never been seen previously. He then found approximately 50 new ways that 14:42.340 --> 14:49.340 had never been seen before of squaring the circle based on looking at the geometry of 14:49.500 --> 14:53.620 these Celtic cross patterns in England. 14:53.620 --> 14:58.780 When this crop circle, after I investigated it and we measured it out, I sent in the diagram 14:58.780 --> 15:03.500 and I said, well, there's the central circle and there are four circles on the outside, 15:03.500 --> 15:08.420 this is a Celtic cross pattern, can you apply your methodology and look at it? It does square 15:08.460 --> 15:13.140 the circle in two ways. I don't have time to go through all the steps, so forgive me, 15:13.140 --> 15:18.140 but these are actually slightly different based on the placements of these outer circles. 15:18.140 --> 15:25.140 There's what he calls a simple squared circle solution and a tangential squared circle solution. 15:25.260 --> 15:32.260 The first one is 99.6% accurate and the second one is 99.98% accurate. 15:33.420 --> 15:37.980 You get this final reconstruction of it and then you've got to go out to the field and 15:37.980 --> 15:42.940 lay it out, right? Think about that for a moment. 15:42.940 --> 15:49.940 The idea of squaring the circle as a philosophical concept, Dr. Carl Young, the famous psychoanalyst, 15:50.580 --> 15:55.820 remarked on it. He said that the squaring of the circle is one of the many archetypal 15:55.820 --> 16:02.000 motifs which form the basic patterns of our dreams and fantasies. From the functional 16:02.000 --> 16:07.640 point of view, it could be called the archetype of wholeness. 16:07.640 --> 16:14.640 The quaternary of the one is what Young described as the schema of all images of God. It's 16:14.960 --> 16:19.880 seen in the Bible, Ezekiel, Daniel, Enoch, even in Egyptian mythology of Horus with the 16:19.880 --> 16:26.720 four sons. This quaternary of the one is related to the squaring of the circle and it's described 16:27.040 --> 16:34.040 as a motif of four, of three, one, two, three, and one, which is offset somehow differently. 16:36.720 --> 16:42.840 It's also described as having a dark half and a light half. If you look at that vesicular 16:42.840 --> 16:49.840 in the center, it's split right down the middle as having a dark half and a light half. 16:50.160 --> 16:57.160 Now Young says that symbolically, lightning depicts an overpowering change in the psychic 16:57.720 --> 17:04.720 condition associated with the quaternity and that this is a transformative process. In 17:04.720 --> 17:11.720 that transformation, Mercurius, the animal spirit, arises in the fire flash into the 17:12.200 --> 17:18.980 prima materia, or the primal substance of existence of the divine essence of God, like 17:18.980 --> 17:25.260 a fiery serpent. This is where the divine innermost birth of the soul takes place. 17:25.260 --> 17:32.260 Remember what Ross was talking about. This is the Cinnabar stage of transformation. 17:32.620 --> 17:39.620 Now Cinnabar, in its old and sort of European language, was known as the Ouroboros dragon, 17:39.620 --> 17:46.620 the sanguist draconis, or the dragon's blood, which is related to the philosopher's stone. 17:50.500 --> 17:57.500 Now in the philosopher's stone sleeps the animal spirit Mercurius, which is also known 17:57.500 --> 18:04.500 as the circle of the moon and the round and the square. Now Young talks about in this 18:04.500 --> 18:11.500 transformative process, there comes to be a turning point, an illuminating, transforming, 18:11.500 --> 18:18.500 fertilizing part of the process, and that the snake is the necessary part of the process 18:18.540 --> 18:24.540 of growth. Now Serpent Mound, if you go back to thinking about what the Hopewell levels 18:24.540 --> 18:31.540 of cosmology were, Serpent Mound is analogous to the Great Horned Serpent, where the snake 18:31.780 --> 18:38.060 was the Great Horned Serpent, or the underwater panther of Hopewell cosmology. The Horned 18:38.060 --> 18:45.060 Serpent was a spirit being connected to curing, medicine, and mythology, and it was a powerful 18:45.060 --> 18:50.780 underground manatee that was the guardian spirit of many Native Americans and liked 18:50.780 --> 18:57.780 to reside in rocks near water. Now traditionally the god of revelation, and that's lower r, 18:58.740 --> 19:04.940 not Bible revelation, but traditionally the god of revelation has the form of a snake, 19:04.940 --> 19:11.940 e.g. the Agathodaman, or the good daemon, encircling the equal cross. Now the Agathodaman 19:13.180 --> 19:20.180 was the pupil or teacher, depending on which mythology read, of Hermes or Mercurius, and 19:21.180 --> 19:28.180 to the Greeks was considered to be the guardian of the vines and the cornfields. Now if we 19:31.340 --> 19:36.340 look at another portion of the crop circle formation that appeared near Serpent Mound, 19:36.340 --> 19:42.700 one portion of it, that one offset by itself, had a ring around it, and that ring had a 19:42.700 --> 19:47.340 little tiny widening in its pathway. Well that widening is a symbol of the 19:47.340 --> 19:54.340 oraboros, or the oraboros dragon, the sanguius draconis. Serpent Mound itself is an analog 20:02.540 --> 20:09.540 for the constellation of Draco. We're seeing these same themes repeat over and over and 20:09.940 --> 20:16.940 over again between the crop circle design and the Serpent Mound formation. So let's 20:16.940 --> 20:23.940 deepen this sort of Thunderbird-Serpent connection a little bit more. A few years ago, as a 20:24.100 --> 20:31.100 scientist, we've been studying crop circles from this sort of very, as Ross termed it, 20:31.620 --> 20:38.620 exogenic sort of way of looking at things, and it's really a sort of limiting world 20:39.620 --> 20:46.620 view, right? Science has its boundaries. Well, I decided that I would start to apply different 20:50.620 --> 20:57.260 sort of methods of thought, including ancient Native American methods of thought, to our 20:57.260 --> 21:03.580 understanding of crop circles to see if we could gain some sort of better understanding 21:03.580 --> 21:09.020 of what's going on with crop circles. And I came upon this idea between the Serpent 21:09.020 --> 21:16.020 and the Thunderbird. Now the Thunderbird, dating back as far as people started documenting 21:17.700 --> 21:24.700 the mythologies of various Native American tribes, has been connected to the Horned 21:24.820 --> 21:30.060 Serpent, but there are also a whole sort of series of mythologies that are unto the Thunderbird 21:30.060 --> 21:35.340 itself, but that the Thunderbird is considered to be something like a god in the shape of 21:35.340 --> 21:41.620 a great eagle that feeds upon serpents, which it takes from under the earth. Now the Ojibwe 21:41.620 --> 21:46.780 believe that the Thunderbird, from time to time, sets forth into different parts of the 21:46.780 --> 21:53.780 world to search for serpents, and that when you see a thunderbolt strike a tree, a lightning 21:54.340 --> 22:01.340 striking a tree, the Indians believe that the Thunderbird had shot its fiery arrow 22:01.340 --> 22:08.340 at the serpent through its eyes, and that it was attempting to get the serpent. Now 22:11.940 --> 22:18.940 this legend was ritually reenacted amongst various Native American tribes as part of 22:19.060 --> 22:26.060 an earth renewal process, and that they believe that this process happened on an annual basis. 22:28.020 --> 22:35.020 So it turns out that the Midewinwin, which is an Algonquin sort of secret society, considered 22:38.220 --> 22:43.900 the Thunderbird as a messenger to the spirit world, and that the Thunderbird lived in 22:43.900 --> 22:50.500 the four quarters, remember our quartering of time and space concept, and that they 22:50.500 --> 22:56.060 are the messengers of the four winds, and that they were always four of them. Now while 22:56.060 --> 23:01.940 all things in nature move clockwise, the Thunderbird is said to move counterclockwise, 23:01.940 --> 23:08.940 and I came across this artifact from the west coast of the United States, which if you look 23:09.940 --> 23:15.940 at the face of it, this is actually a wall, you kind of stick a string through the middle 23:15.940 --> 23:21.940 of it and you wind it up and you spin it, and it makes the Thunderbird look like that. 23:21.940 --> 23:28.940 Now if you look at that image for a moment, you'll notice that that is the identical 23:28.940 --> 23:34.940 appearance to the hourglass effect that we see in crop circles on the landscape. You'll 23:35.700 --> 23:42.700 see as they're spun flat, they exhibit this hourglass shape. Now at the lunch break, 23:45.900 --> 23:52.340 I ran up to my room and I threw in three additional slides, because in the first morning talk 23:52.340 --> 23:59.340 of Glenn Kreisberg, he showed this picture, and he didn't really talk about why that 23:59.980 --> 24:06.980 is important. This comes from an archeologist by the name of Herman Bender up in Wisconsin, 24:10.300 --> 24:17.300 and Herman Bender has been looking at effigy mounds and petroform sites up in the state 24:18.020 --> 24:24.500 of Wisconsin, and this comes from a place known as the Colterman site. Now the Colterman 24:24.580 --> 24:31.580 site was important because when Herman Bender looked at it, he found that the effigy mounds, 24:33.460 --> 24:38.340 which are here, which are earthworks placed in the landscape in the shape of animals, 24:38.340 --> 24:45.340 they overlaid this older stone figure in the landscape. Now they also found there that 24:46.340 --> 24:53.340 one of the stones had a petroglyph inscription on it in the shape of a thunderbird. So Herman 24:56.820 --> 25:03.500 Bender was pretty intrigued, and he looked at it, and it turns out to be a combination 25:03.500 --> 25:10.500 of the constellations of Scorpius and Libra combined. And this little red one right in 25:10.700 --> 25:17.700 the center is actually where the planet Mars goes through that constellation on a yearly 25:17.780 --> 25:24.780 basis. Now they didn't just lay it out, they laid it out as a mirror image, remember, 25:25.980 --> 25:32.980 as above, reflected below. It's a mirror image of it, and they got the colors of the 25:33.380 --> 25:40.380 stones to match the colors of the stars in the sky. So when you go out into the sky, 25:40.500 --> 25:46.220 into the landscape, into these forested areas, into the east coast, or anywhere you find 25:46.220 --> 25:53.220 these stones in the landscape, don't move the stones, because you're going to lose 25:53.420 --> 26:00.420 this kind of information. Don't move the stones. Now, it turns out that that figure 26:03.420 --> 26:09.820 of the constellation of Libra and Scorpius combined in Native American lore is a figure 26:09.820 --> 26:16.820 known as the Star Being. And that Star Being was considered to be the harbinger of the 26:18.020 --> 26:25.020 annual return of the thunderbirds. So when that figure arose in the sky in the spring, 26:27.060 --> 26:34.060 the Native Americans knew that the thunderbirds were going to return. It's a very important 26:34.260 --> 26:39.820 sort of mythological figure. Well, it turns out this Coltomans site, I don't have time 26:39.820 --> 26:46.820 to go into all of it, but the Coltomans site was the location whereby we had the report 26:48.260 --> 26:55.260 of the last crop circle I witnessed by someone. Back in 2003, two months before the Serpent 26:56.220 --> 27:03.220 Mound crop circle came down by Serpent Mound, a crop circle came down right near the Coltomans 27:03.300 --> 27:10.300 Petroform site, and a guy actually watched it go down. Not man-made. Three different 27:10.900 --> 27:15.780 circles swirled down in about 12 seconds. We have pictures of it at the table in the 27:15.780 --> 27:20.220 back if you want to look at it, or if you go out to the ICCRA.org, you can see that 27:20.220 --> 27:27.220 crop circle there. Now, what's that? Yes, Art Rantella. Art Rantella was the eyewitness. 27:27.220 --> 27:34.220 Now, interestingly enough, this idea of Scorpius and Libra combined, literally and symbolically 27:41.140 --> 27:48.140 in its relationship with Orion in the sky, re-enacts the movement of the thunderbirds. 27:48.500 --> 27:55.500 The thunderbirds were said to move from northeast to southeast across the sky. The thunderbirds 27:57.220 --> 28:04.220 crossed the landscape. That's exactly how these constellations move in the sky. They 28:04.380 --> 28:11.380 follow that, and at the end of that is when you have that great Earth renewal ceremony. 28:14.660 --> 28:21.660 Of course, the Native Americans did not connect the star patterns like what we've been saying 28:22.660 --> 28:29.660 throughout the evening. The modern constellations that we're talking about of Scorpius and 28:30.220 --> 28:37.220 Libra and Draco, they connected the dots differently. They had their own star asterisms in the 28:37.940 --> 28:44.940 sky. Constellations were fixed, actually fairly recently, based on older traditions. The 28:45.940 --> 28:52.940 modern constellations, the 88 of them that are known, were agreed upon by astronomers 28:55.460 --> 29:02.460 at the International Astronomical Union meeting in 1931. That's somewhat modern. A bunch 29:05.020 --> 29:09.660 of constellations that you see when you open up these star books and stuff are actually 29:09.900 --> 29:15.820 modern inventions. There were older traditions of constellations that were quite a bit different 29:15.820 --> 29:20.940 than modern constellations that we know today. The Native Americans, of course, connected 29:20.940 --> 29:25.300 the dots wholly differently. The Chinese connected the dots wholly differently. You go to different 29:25.300 --> 29:29.140 cultures around the world that were isolated from one another, and they essentially connected 29:29.140 --> 29:35.540 the dots differently. The stories attached to some of those are somewhat related to one 29:35.540 --> 29:42.540 another. It turns out that the constellation of Draco, according to the Lakota, who in 29:44.620 --> 29:51.620 their past moved from the Ohio Valley. They moved from ancient times from the Ohio Valley 29:52.180 --> 29:58.420 up into Wisconsin, and then from Wisconsin out to the Western Plains states. The Lakota 29:58.420 --> 29:46.240 regarded the Thunderbird as Draco. Think about the 29:46.240 --> 29:40.160 ! The 29:40.160 --> 29:40.160 29:40.160 --> 29:40.160 29:40.160 --> 29:40.160 29:40.160 --> 29:40.160 29:40.160 --> 29:40.160 29:40.160 --> 29:40.160 29:40.160 --> 29:40.160 29:40.160 --> 29:40.160 29:40.160 --> 29:40.160 29:40.160 --> 29:40.160 29:40.160 --> 29:40.160 29:40.160 --> 29:40.160 29:40.160 --> 29:40.160 29:40.160 --> 29:40.160 29:40.160 --> 29:40.160 29:40.160 --> 29:40.160 29:40.160 --> 29:40.160 29:40.160 --> 29:40.160 29:40.160 --> 29:40.160 29:40.160 --> 29:40.160 29:40.160 --> 29:40.160 29:40.160 --> 29:40.160 29:40.160 --> 29:40.160 29:40.160 --> 29:40.160 29:40.160 --> 29:40.160 29:40.160 --> 29:40.160 29:40.160 --> 29:40.160 29:40.160 --> 29:40.160 29:40.160 --> 29:40.160 29:40.160 --> 29:40.160 29:40.160 --> 29:40.160 29:40.160 --> 29:40.160
