1 01:00:01,420 --> 01:00:07,420 You 00:30.000 --> 00:32.000 You 01:00.000 --> 01:02.000 You 01:10.200 --> 01:12.600 The main importance of sigh is 01:13.240 --> 01:21.600 Establishing a solid scientific basis to say the transpersonal should be looked at seriously. I am able to sense a lot of different 01:22.720 --> 01:25.000 like dimensions of life and 01:25.520 --> 01:29.880 It's all interconnected and apparently the rest of the world's not seen 01:30.720 --> 01:34.600 Thoughts are actually faster than the speed of light and that's worth remembering 01:35.120 --> 01:40.920 This is useful in the sense of demonstrating to somebody something that's interesting, but it doesn't count as evidence 01:41.600 --> 01:46.040 In the scientific sense we are in wireless broadcasting with everything around us 01:46.840 --> 01:53.140 Everything is broadcasting everything is receiving and once you get that in your consciousness. You'll never feel 01:53.740 --> 01:59.100 Disconnected or separated again when I've asked them these questions about do you really believe this they look at me like? 01:59.620 --> 02:04.560 What's wrong with you? You can't see it. It's all around you, but one very well-known 02:05.340 --> 02:10.840 Scientists came back and said this is the kind of thing. I wouldn't believe in even if it were true we 02:12.040 --> 02:14.580 humans are unlimited and 02:15.620 --> 02:17.620 the more 02:18.100 --> 02:21.060 We practice something the better we get 02:23.140 --> 02:25.140 I 02:25.140 --> 02:27.140 I 02:45.580 --> 02:52.740 I've been thinking about this subject ever since I was at university when I discovered there were other philosophies in life and not just 02:53.140 --> 02:57.560 religions with rules I've puzzled over metaphysics and esoteric books 02:58.140 --> 03:06.020 Dabbled in yoga and meditation. I've been soothed by energy healers healed by acupuncturists and had my fortune read 03:07.340 --> 03:13.820 I've never thought too much about psychic phenomena. I don't think I'm any more psychic than the next person 03:15.180 --> 03:21.100 Certainly not as psychic as my cat who mysteriously knows to disappear just before a vet appointment 03:23.740 --> 03:27.820 Recently three strange events happened around me all at once 03:29.180 --> 03:31.180 First there was the story of my daughter 03:32.260 --> 03:41.200 I had a dream where I was in the house of Tana's mother and her mother was lying in 03:42.100 --> 03:44.100 her bed and 03:44.180 --> 03:48.580 She was suffering from something and she was saying help me 03:49.060 --> 03:52.700 Help me and she was reaching her hand. No one was helping her 03:52.700 --> 03:58.360 So and I felt as I was part of the ceiling just looking down 03:59.020 --> 04:00.980 as I didn't 04:00.980 --> 04:02.220 remember the 04:02.220 --> 04:06.100 Dream when I woke up I woke up from normal and it was 04:06.860 --> 04:13.100 Walking on the beach that we got a call from Tana that her mother had died that night. I 04:13.900 --> 04:21.980 Was like totally freaked out as though I could have seen the future and I felt as though I could have helped her 04:23.940 --> 04:29.220 Then out of the blue I felt compelled by some strong force to ring my father 04:29.940 --> 04:34.340 Only to be told he had had an accident and was an intensive care 04:34.340 --> 04:44.020 Then the third thing happened I was filming my friend's wedding and the spoon-bending performer turned up I 04:44.980 --> 04:48.940 watched him like a hawk he had to be a fraud 04:55.380 --> 04:59.380 And a little blow makes it back to a paper check it out of the air 05:00.020 --> 05:02.020 And a little blow 05:04.420 --> 05:10.140 Then I invited him home to bend my kitchen spins and I could observe his tricks a little closer 05:24.020 --> 05:27.240 Still stainless steel wonderful. So it is a stainless steel teaspoon 05:29.380 --> 05:33.340 So if I take it and I rub it between the head and the neck, excuse me, sorry 05:46.020 --> 05:52.920 Don't know how he did it, but I'm sure it's a sleight of hand, but I know the other two incidents were real 05:54.900 --> 05:57.840 How do I distinguish between tricks and truth 05:58.760 --> 06:01.640 Tell the difference between a psychic and a fraud. I 06:03.480 --> 06:08.600 Want to know what science has to say about these mysterious matters. I want to know if 06:10.040 --> 06:12.040 How and why? 06:14.680 --> 06:19.280 And is there an explanation or evidence to prove them 06:22.920 --> 06:27.200 California has always had a great tolerance for innovation and new ways of thinking 06:28.480 --> 06:33.260 There are plenty of scientists to talk to and the one who has agreed to guide me on this journey 06:33.680 --> 06:36.740 Lives in my old university town of Berkeley 06:41.480 --> 06:42.420 I 06:42.420 --> 06:49.160 Am on my way to professor tart. He is one of the grandfathers of parapsychology as he has been 06:49.680 --> 06:52.480 Investigating psychic phenomena for almost half a century 06:53.440 --> 06:55.440 Good morning, Renee. I 06:55.960 --> 06:59.080 Didn't expect to be filmed opening the door, but what the heck 07:04.520 --> 07:13.240 The psychical research or parapsychology as it morphed into eventually has been around for roughly a hundred and some years and 07:14.040 --> 07:16.040 During that time there have been a few 07:16.760 --> 07:25.080 Psychic phenomena that have been explored at great length such that there are hundreds of experiments demonstrating the reality of each of those 07:25.440 --> 07:29.800 There are also some things that simply haven't been investigated that much and that minor might not be real 07:30.480 --> 07:32.480 But the ones that are real 07:32.680 --> 07:40.280 By any reasonable criteria of science are the ones I call the big five and that's telepathy on the one hand 07:40.680 --> 07:41.960 mind-to-mind 07:41.960 --> 07:43.080 communication 07:43.080 --> 07:49.720 Second is clairvoyance the direct knowledge of the physical world when it's not known to anyone else at that time 07:49.880 --> 07:54.080 The third of the big five is precognition and I must say this is the one I 07:54.440 --> 08:01.000 Have the most trouble with intellectually because I can't really imagine how it could happen, but the evidence shows that it's happened 08:01.900 --> 08:04.240 the fourth of the big five is 08:05.080 --> 08:09.680 Psychokinesis or telekinesis to use an older term mind over matter and 08:10.480 --> 08:12.480 the fifth is 08:12.560 --> 08:14.560 psychic healing 08:15.120 --> 08:21.820 These I call the big five simply because there are hundreds of experiments supporting the reality of each one and they're very rigorous 08:22.220 --> 08:27.660 Experiments are done to much higher standards of control than experiments in almost all other fields of science 08:28.900 --> 08:30.900 Aha, ah 08:31.700 --> 08:34.580 Yes, that's a nice twist 08:36.340 --> 08:38.740 And you can still use it 08:39.540 --> 08:43.820 So I think of the bent spoon stuff as the universe sort of 08:44.540 --> 08:47.820 Teasing us sometimes as to what's going on here 08:47.820 --> 08:52.140 I much prefer to rely on the laboratory research on mind over matter 08:52.540 --> 08:56.620 Where you do have things happen under conditions where you actually know what went on 09:04.700 --> 09:12.060 Now that professor Tartt is retired from UC Davis he teaches at the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology in Palo Alto 09:18.820 --> 09:20.820 I 09:23.220 --> 09:27.860 Got into the spiritual emergency business without knowing I was going to get into it 09:28.580 --> 09:36.980 Forty-some years ago and over the years I have gotten it must be thousands of phone calls letters mostly emails now 09:37.500 --> 09:45.220 From people who've had unusual experiences and a lot of cases. They're frightened. They're confused. They don't understand 09:45.220 --> 09:47.220 what's happened to them and 09:47.220 --> 09:50.060 I would look at the experiences and I'd say oh, yeah 09:50.060 --> 09:56.300 Well, that's a telepathic experience and that's an apparition of the dead and so forth and sort of gave it a name 09:59.260 --> 10:01.260 Trans is talking about 10:03.180 --> 10:09.140 Breakthroughs or mystical experiences or epiphanies or a person 10:09.900 --> 10:15.740 Experiences being part of something much bigger than just their ordinary biological and social self 10:15.740 --> 10:17.820 It's a mirror you can shoot yourself in 10:20.620 --> 10:26.780 So if someone feels they've contacted God or been at one with the universe 10:27.660 --> 10:34.300 Unified with nature or something like that and it's a real feeling not just an idea but a real deep feeling 10:34.460 --> 10:39.740 That's what we mean by a transpersonal experience. They forget their ordinary little self 10:40.940 --> 10:43.780 Called from moral than Edgar Mitchell 10:44.340 --> 10:46.340 Exploded surface 10:54.460 --> 10:58.980 After the work was done and I was able to look at the earth the moon and the Sun as 10:59.820 --> 11:04.660 They passed through the cabin window as we were coming home and I was able to 11:05.260 --> 11:10.220 look at the heavens and suddenly realized that the molecules of my body and the 11:10.780 --> 11:18.260 Molecules in the spacecraft had been manufactured and created and prototyped in some ancient generation of stars and 11:19.500 --> 11:20.820 instead of a 11:20.820 --> 11:22.180 intellectual knowledge 11:22.180 --> 11:26.300 It was a visceral knowing and connection a feeling of connection 11:26.740 --> 11:31.060 with the star systems that created us created the matter in our bodies and 11:31.820 --> 11:39.140 It was accompanied by a very blissful feeling that I'd never experienced before a life-changing sort of experience and 11:40.140 --> 11:48.380 One that I think that I've come to realize is perhaps our evolutionary destiny provided we survive that long 11:58.500 --> 11:59.760 In 11:59.760 --> 12:03.140 1974 Edgar Mitchell was the sixth man to walk on the moon 12:03.940 --> 12:09.980 Since his epiphany he has been dedicating his life to looking for answers to explain what happened to him 12:16.100 --> 12:21.200 He put his money where his mouth was and founded the Institute of noetic sciences 12:21.920 --> 12:25.220 Noetic means to reveal a deep and profound truth 12:28.580 --> 12:32.980 Here at the Institute they investigate science with the spiritual dimension 12:33.140 --> 12:35.140 of the universe 12:36.340 --> 12:42.380 Professor Tart has offered to be my introduction to a small band of courageous men the frontier 12:42.780 --> 12:48.940 Scientists doing the experiments in these fields. This is fortunate as they were very tentative to meet me 12:49.340 --> 12:54.620 There's a lot of prejudice and a lot of skepticism against psychic or Psy research 12:56.020 --> 12:59.020 Some scientists have even lost their jobs over it 13:00.020 --> 13:04.620 Dean Raden is one of the most famous parapsychologists in the US 13:05.580 --> 13:13.140 Like professor Tart. He is a well published author and has been doing experiments into psychic phenomena for 30 odd years 13:15.740 --> 13:17.740 Do you think this is a trick 13:19.420 --> 13:26.580 And in this case it's not you have to ask is it possible in principle to do this with force and the answer is yes 13:27.260 --> 13:32.260 Then the second question is can somebody dissociate so they're not aware of what they're doing the answer is yes 13:32.260 --> 13:34.260 So in a case like this, we don't know 13:40.700 --> 13:42.700 When you look at the 13:43.060 --> 13:47.580 overall results of experiments on telepathy and unclear voyance and precognition 13:48.420 --> 13:53.860 and also psychokinesis you find that the cumulative data is 13:54.420 --> 13:58.540 Quite strong in favor of the existence of these effects 13:59.220 --> 14:02.420 you also find that the effects are much weaker and 14:03.340 --> 14:07.200 What you see in the laboratory and what people typically report in their real life 14:13.900 --> 14:19.220 My daughter was very young probably around two and we were walking down the street and 14:20.260 --> 14:22.260 I suddenly was 14:22.620 --> 14:29.620 Confronted by what appeared to be an angel standing in front of me and telling me to go to the other side of the street and 14:30.060 --> 14:34.820 to move very quickly so I picked my daughter up and ran across the street and 14:35.420 --> 14:40.420 Then I turned around to look behind me to see what was happening 14:41.220 --> 14:45.580 Just as they were trying to lower a grand piano from an upstairs 14:46.420 --> 14:53.380 Window and the cable snapped on that piano it came straight down and crash the keys 14:53.580 --> 14:56.900 Flew right out sideways in both directions 15:03.700 --> 15:09.100 Some of the experiences that people have in life with so-called crisis telepathy and 15:09.700 --> 15:14.900 Precognition and dreams and that sort of thing we know that in principle some of that is real sometimes 15:15.580 --> 15:21.020 But on the basis of any given story you never know Dean is currently investigating 15:22.100 --> 15:28.900 Precognition also called pre sentiment it is an ability to foresee or for sense the future 15:29.340 --> 15:33.020 It can occur as a vision a mental flash or a dream 15:39.740 --> 15:41.740 Can you see the future 15:42.060 --> 15:44.640 Okay, so let's at this point bring in Oshara's head 15:45.580 --> 15:47.580 The rest of her body can follow 15:48.620 --> 15:52.020 The experiment involving the eye tracker is looking for 15:53.060 --> 15:59.000 Presentiment in in the eye essentially so when the experiment is running you'll see that 15:59.500 --> 16:05.420 Oshara's eye will be here, and it's tracking the eye, and this is what she will see 16:07.060 --> 16:09.060 The movement of the pupil is 16:09.380 --> 16:12.180 Reflective both of the amount of light that's coming in 16:12.300 --> 16:16.200 But it also reflects your emotional response to what you what you're looking at 16:16.620 --> 16:21.260 So we hope to find in this experiment is that when you see an emotional picture 16:21.260 --> 16:26.380 You have a may have a certain big response in your pupil, and when you see a calm picture you have a response 16:26.380 --> 16:31.420 But it's not so big that's when you see it the question is what happens to your eye before you see it 16:31.420 --> 16:35.380 Now in the case before you see these pictures you're always looking at a gray screen 16:35.380 --> 16:40.620 There's nothing there, so you wouldn't expect by any conventional reason that the eye would be changing 16:40.620 --> 16:46.140 But the presentiment studies suggests that the eye and the body everything in the body does change 16:46.140 --> 16:49.620 It is responding to apparently your future 17:02.060 --> 17:06.020 Here's the three-second period before the picture is selected and what we 17:06.580 --> 17:11.980 We hope to find is that when there is a big emotional response in the future and causes an emotional 17:12.540 --> 17:17.240 Dilation that there would be a similar dilation beforehand, and as you see that's what ended up with her 17:22.180 --> 17:29.380 This difference in pupil dilation mimics what happens later, so this is a presentiment this area here 17:31.580 --> 17:40.340 So the future is very emotional it may in a sense leak backwards in time and affect your how you behave now 17:45.420 --> 17:50.700 Most of the evidence in the laboratory comes from the equivalent of college sophomores 17:51.180 --> 17:56.460 They come from from people just ordinary people who are maybe interested in this maybe not I 17:57.460 --> 18:03.540 Think of this study as looking through the window to the soul to see the future 18:04.260 --> 18:07.020 That's the poetic way of thinking about this study 18:16.540 --> 18:19.940 It was December about 15 years ago 18:20.700 --> 18:23.780 When I suddenly got a phone call from Good Morning America 18:24.140 --> 18:27.740 one of the largest morning talk shows here in the United States and 18:28.140 --> 18:34.700 They wanted to book Deepak Chopra for an interview which normally would have been amazing news really fantastic 18:34.700 --> 18:36.580 He wasn't yet a household name 18:36.580 --> 18:43.460 the problem is is that or was is that Deepak had just left a few days before to go on a safari to 18:43.700 --> 18:45.700 Africa with his family and 18:45.740 --> 18:48.980 Right before he left he called and he said I'm gonna be completely 18:49.620 --> 18:55.220 Unreachable for the next two weeks and this was way before email or cell phones 18:55.220 --> 18:59.900 And it just wasn't gonna be possible to call him and the producer said to me 18:59.900 --> 19:05.380 I need to know in 24 hours if he can be on the show on January 2nd 19:05.380 --> 19:11.540 And I was just going crazy thinking you know I can't commit him because I don't know his schedule 19:11.660 --> 19:14.500 And I can't say no because it's such a great opportunity 19:15.220 --> 19:16.420 So I just said okay 19:16.420 --> 19:21.420 I'll call you back in 15 minutes, and I closed my eyes and inside of my mind 19:21.420 --> 19:26.420 I screamed as loud as I could Deepak call me and 19:27.420 --> 19:34.020 10 seconds later the phone rang and it was Deepak, and he said what do you need and I said how did you know? 19:34.460 --> 19:38.740 He said I knew what do you need and I told him and he said of course 19:38.740 --> 19:44.740 I'll do the show and January 2nd's perfect. I called the producer back. We booked it and everything worked out 19:54.140 --> 20:01.600 Telepathy means instant communication between two people regardless of distance through means other than the five senses 20:02.200 --> 20:04.720 The person who has done the most research on telepathy 20:04.720 --> 20:11.760 Thousands of experiments in the last 30 years is the British biologist and philosopher Rupert Sheldrake 20:11.760 --> 20:20.160 And telepathy happens between people who are closely bonded emotionally or between people and animals if there's a close emotional bond 20:20.160 --> 20:22.800 It doesn't typically happen between strangers 20:22.800 --> 20:29.000 I've done a lot of experiments on telephone telepathy that show that people really can tell who's calling 20:29.000 --> 20:33.000 In these experiments the caller names four people they know well 20:33.000 --> 20:37.000 They give us their phone numbers. We pick one of the four senders 20:40.400 --> 20:47.400 The sender rings them up the phone rings they have to guess before they answer the phone who's calling 20:47.400 --> 20:49.400 Maureen 20:51.400 --> 20:53.400 Maureen 20:53.400 --> 20:55.400 Yes 20:55.400 --> 20:57.400 Yes 20:57.400 --> 20:59.400 Oh yes 20:59.400 --> 21:04.800 By chance they'd be right one time in four at 25% in our experiments 21:04.800 --> 21:09.600 They're right about 45% of the time and I now have an automated version of this experiment 21:10.000 --> 21:14.400 For emails on the internet and also for SMS messages 21:14.400 --> 21:19.140 So it's now possible to do these experiments on a wide scale 21:19.960 --> 21:21.960 using modern technologies 21:27.800 --> 21:30.800 Telepathy works between people who know each other well 21:30.800 --> 21:36.800 The sense of being stared at often happens with strangers and I think in nature 21:36.800 --> 21:40.800 It's probably evolved in connection with predator-prey relationships 21:40.800 --> 21:46.800 That if prey animals could tell when predators were looking at them they'd escape better than if they couldn't tell 21:46.800 --> 21:54.800 And this sense of being stared at is common in animals, not just in people. It's a biological phenomenon 21:57.400 --> 22:01.400 Our conscious awareness is a very thin slice of what we're actually able to perceive 22:01.400 --> 22:05.400 And there's a huge amount of additional perception going on below the surface 22:05.400 --> 22:12.400 So another category of telepathy experiments is whether or not you can feel that someone is paying attention to you 22:12.400 --> 22:16.400 So they're sometimes called remote staring experiments 22:16.400 --> 22:19.400 And when I think you're looking at me look at the camera 22:19.400 --> 22:21.400 Right 22:21.400 --> 22:23.400 Okay 22:23.400 --> 22:28.400 So what I'm going to do now is make sure that we're picking up the physiology okay 22:31.400 --> 22:34.400 We take two people and separate them 22:34.400 --> 22:37.400 And instead of having one try to mentally send information to the other 22:37.400 --> 22:41.400 You simply have them look at a closed circuit video image of them 22:41.400 --> 22:46.400 And try to mentally or intend very intently to capture their attention 22:46.400 --> 22:48.400 Simply by looking at them 22:48.400 --> 22:50.400 You're just watching them 22:50.400 --> 22:52.400 You're just waiting here for an image to come up 22:52.400 --> 22:59.400 And as soon as it comes up put every ounce of intention that you can have onto the screen 22:59.400 --> 23:01.400 Look at us 23:01.400 --> 23:03.400 Okay so there's the end of the ten seconds 23:03.400 --> 23:06.400 This is the moment when the TV screen turns on 23:06.400 --> 23:09.400 And so she immediately stops relaxing 23:09.400 --> 23:13.400 Starts to become more aroused and then near the end of it begins to relax again 23:13.400 --> 23:16.400 So this suggests that this kind of response 23:16.400 --> 23:13.420 Skin conductance aroused by the 23:13.420 --> 23:16.420 And a restriction in blood flow during that period 23:16.420 --> 23:20.420 If it happens often enough on average over the course of the session 23:20.420 --> 23:25.420 Then it gives us evidence that she was responding physiologically to our distant intention 23:25.420 --> 23:30.420 So what this tells us is that these psychic connections are probably 23:30.420 --> 23:33.420 The most important part of the process 23:33.420 --> 23:35.420 And that's what we're going to do 23:35.420 --> 23:38.420 We're going to take a look at the results of the experiment 23:38.420 --> 23:41.420 And we're going to look at the results of the experiment 23:41.420 --> 23:45.420 The psychic connections are probably there all the time 23:45.420 --> 23:48.420 Most of the time they're operating at the level of the unconscious 23:48.420 --> 23:52.420 And it's only fairly rare that it rises to the level of awareness 23:52.420 --> 23:54.420 That people can report it 23:54.420 --> 24:00.420 On those occasions when your senses are turned off or subdued 24:00.420 --> 24:05.420 That's largely where people begin to report these other forms of connections 24:05.420 --> 24:09.420 So meditation, dreaming, drumming, dancing, drugs 24:09.420 --> 24:13.420 All these kinds of things will deflect your ordinary attention 24:13.420 --> 24:16.420 And allow you to pay more attention to other things 24:40.420 --> 24:43.420 This is the official Oscar magnet 24:45.420 --> 24:48.420 Well, Oscar has a very uncanny ability 24:48.420 --> 24:54.420 And his uncanny ability is that he knows when terminal dementia patients are about to die 24:54.420 --> 24:58.420 Generally anywhere from two to four hours before a death 24:58.420 --> 25:00.420 Oscar will wander into a room 25:00.420 --> 25:03.420 He usually will leap onto the bed if he's allowed by the family 25:03.420 --> 25:05.420 And stay there 25:05.420 --> 25:07.420 Usually he curls up next to the patient 25:07.420 --> 25:11.420 And he almost serves as an early warning system, so to speak, for us 25:11.420 --> 25:14.420 When we know Oscar is milling around a patient 25:14.420 --> 25:18.420 We know that we need to ramp up our end-of-life services 25:18.420 --> 25:21.420 We know that it might be time to call the family in from home 25:21.420 --> 25:24.420 Because he stays until the patient dies 25:31.420 --> 25:35.420 Many dogs, cats and other animals pick up their own intentions 25:35.420 --> 25:38.420 They seem to be telepathic with their owners 25:38.420 --> 25:43.420 One of the ways in which dogs show this behaviour is knowing when their owners are coming home 25:43.420 --> 25:49.420 About 50% of dog owners have found that the dog goes and waits at a door or a window 25:49.420 --> 25:52.420 Before the person gets home 25:57.420 --> 26:00.420 We've done experiments that show it is really happening 26:00.420 --> 26:03.420 We've filmed the place where the dog waits 26:03.420 --> 26:06.420 We have people go at least five miles away 26:06.420 --> 26:08.420 We have them come home at random times 26:08.420 --> 26:12.420 They travel by taxi to avoid familiar car sounds 26:12.420 --> 26:13.420 And the dogs still know 26:13.420 --> 26:16.420 They start waiting when the person decides to go home 26:16.420 --> 26:19.420 So they're responding to the person's intention 26:19.420 --> 26:23.420 And therefore it seems to be a telepathic phenomenon 26:23.420 --> 26:25.420 It's what's going on in the person's mind 26:25.420 --> 26:29.420 Not noises or physical clues or anything like that 26:29.420 --> 26:31.420 That's telling the dog when they're coming 26:33.420 --> 26:36.420 The dog is a social animal 26:36.420 --> 26:39.420 It's a social animal 26:39.420 --> 26:42.420 It's a social animal 26:42.420 --> 26:45.420 It's a social animal 26:45.420 --> 26:48.420 It's a social animal 26:48.420 --> 26:51.420 It's a social animal 26:51.420 --> 26:54.420 It's a social animal 26:54.420 --> 26:57.420 It's a social animal 26:57.420 --> 27:00.420 It's a social animal 27:00.420 --> 27:04.420 Telepathic phenomena have fields for social groups 27:04.420 --> 27:07.420 That link the members together within the group 27:07.420 --> 27:10.420 And continue to connect them even when they're away from each other 27:10.420 --> 27:13.420 Physically separated 27:13.420 --> 27:18.420 The closest physical analogy to telepathy is in quantum physics 27:18.420 --> 27:21.420 Quantum non-locality 27:21.420 --> 27:25.420 Quantum non-locality is when two particles have been part of the same system 27:25.420 --> 27:27.420 They're part of the same system 27:27.420 --> 27:28.420 They move apart 27:28.420 --> 27:31.420 They remain linked to each other or entangled 27:31.420 --> 27:34.420 As quantum physicists say 27:34.420 --> 27:37.420 So that a change in one instantly affects the other 27:47.420 --> 27:51.420 My idea of morphic fields is very similar in spirit to quantum theory 27:51.420 --> 27:54.420 The morphic fields are a bit like quantum fields 27:54.420 --> 27:56.420 They're probability structures 27:56.420 --> 27:58.420 Organized by invisible fields 27:58.420 --> 28:01.420 Living organisms are organized by invisible fields 28:01.420 --> 28:04.420 This seems to be the nature of nature 28:10.420 --> 28:13.420 Telepathy suggests a form of connection between people 28:13.420 --> 28:15.420 So if two people are really connected 28:15.420 --> 28:18.420 And if you separate them and you poke one of them 28:18.420 --> 28:20.420 The other one should flinch 28:20.420 --> 28:23.420 And one of the more interesting studies of this type that I know of 28:23.420 --> 28:28.420 Was done by colleagues at Bastyr University and the University of Washington 28:28.420 --> 28:32.420 They selected one couple out of 30 couples 28:32.420 --> 28:37.420 And then they put the person playing the role of the receiver in a functional MRI 28:37.420 --> 28:41.420 This is a brain scanner that's looking at what's happening, the blood flow in your head 28:41.420 --> 28:43.420 And they put the other person at a distance 28:43.420 --> 28:48.420 And exposed the descending person to flashing lights or to static lights 28:48.420 --> 28:52.420 And the question was if these two people are really connected mentally 28:52.420 --> 28:54.420 And when one person is seeing flashing lights 28:54.420 --> 28:57.420 Maybe the brain of the other one will light up as well 28:57.420 --> 29:01.420 So they did this experiment and they found that the receiver's brain was lighting up 29:01.420 --> 29:04.420 And it was lighting up in the visual cortex 29:07.420 --> 29:12.420 This actually not only shows that telepathy is real under highly controlled conditions 29:12.420 --> 29:16.420 It tells us a little bit about the nature of what that connection is 29:16.420 --> 29:20.420 It would be very, very unlikely that it's a kind of signal connection 29:20.420 --> 29:24.420 Meaning like a radio sending a signal from one place to the other 29:24.420 --> 29:28.420 Because the usual form of signaling was excluded 29:28.420 --> 29:32.420 So instead if two brains are in a sense almost acting like one 29:32.420 --> 29:37.420 It suggests that the connections we're talking about are a holistic connection 29:37.420 --> 29:42.420 And I think that begins to point more towards a quantum connection 29:42.420 --> 29:45.420 Rather than any form of classical connection 29:50.420 --> 29:55.420 I was approached by the grandmother of a nine month old child that had been taken 29:55.420 --> 29:59.420 There was a divorce situation going on 29:59.420 --> 30:03.420 So they brought me pictures and the baby's teddy bear 30:03.420 --> 30:08.420 And I started, it was kind of difficult because I go through thought patterns 30:08.420 --> 30:12.420 And because he's nine months old and he's in a car seat 30:12.420 --> 30:14.420 He can't see out the windows 30:14.420 --> 30:17.420 So all I can see is the underarm 30:17.420 --> 30:21.420 And so I would keep track of it over a period of days 30:21.420 --> 30:27.420 And then one morning I got up and I called the officer that I was working with 30:27.420 --> 30:32.420 And I said, he's with this lady and I described what the lady looked like 30:32.420 --> 30:36.420 And they're going to go to a grocery store this morning 30:36.420 --> 30:40.420 And I described what the grocery store looked like and where it was 30:40.420 --> 30:44.420 He figured out who the woman was that I was talking about 30:44.420 --> 30:48.420 It was the sister of the man who had taken the baby 30:48.420 --> 30:53.420 So they spent the morning, all these agents, walking around the grocery store 30:53.420 --> 30:56.420 Pretending to shop, waiting for her to show up 30:56.420 --> 30:59.420 And then she showed up, she had the baby with her 30:59.420 --> 31:04.420 And they were trying to figure out what to do when she walked away 31:04.420 --> 31:09.420 And left a nine month old unattended in a grocery cart 31:09.420 --> 31:11.420 And the agents just swooped out 31:11.420 --> 31:17.420 And rolled it away and they arrested her as a co-conspirator for kidnapping the baby 31:17.420 --> 31:22.420 If I'm working from crime scene photos, which is the way I prefer to work 31:22.420 --> 31:26.420 Then the event itself starts re-running in my head 31:26.420 --> 31:29.420 It's like a movie that's been very poorly edited 31:29.420 --> 31:32.420 The sound doesn't work very well 31:32.420 --> 31:37.420 And I can get snippets of sound, a little short running sequence 31:37.420 --> 31:38.420 And then there'll be a gap 31:38.420 --> 31:42.420 And it's like watching a poor quality movie 31:42.420 --> 31:45.420 But I've learned how to rerun images many times 31:45.420 --> 31:49.420 So that if a police officer asks me a question, I can rerun the image 31:49.420 --> 31:55.420 Look at it from an adjusted angle and get the information they're asking me for 31:55.420 --> 31:58.420 So I am technically doing remote viewing 31:58.420 --> 32:00.420 Although most people don't think of it that way 32:07.420 --> 32:11.420 Remote viewing is the scientific term for clairvoyance 32:11.420 --> 32:17.420 Using our sixth sense to get information about a distant place or object 32:17.420 --> 32:21.420 I was a straightforward laser physicist at Stanford University 32:21.420 --> 32:24.420 I graduated with my PhD there 32:24.420 --> 32:29.420 And then I went to the University of California 32:29.420 --> 32:31.420 And I was a very good student 32:31.420 --> 32:33.420 And I was very good at science 32:33.420 --> 32:35.420 I graduated with my PhD there 32:35.420 --> 32:43.420 And then I worked on a textbook, graduate-level textbook on quantum electronics and lasers 32:43.420 --> 32:48.420 And there's nothing like writing a textbook on the subject to realize how much you don't know 32:48.420 --> 32:53.420 And one of the things that struck me as I was working on the book was that 32:53.420 --> 33:00.420 We have a pretty good quantum description of all kinds of mechanistic, inorganic interactions 33:00.420 --> 33:08.420 But we don't have a quantum theory that even begins to touch on mind or that kind of thing 33:08.420 --> 33:13.420 Can some strange and as yet unexplained psychic ability 33:13.420 --> 33:17.420 Help us to see that which is concealed from ordinary vision? 33:19.420 --> 33:25.420 Is there something in the human mind that can gather information our normal senses do not know? 33:30.420 --> 33:38.420 In the early 1970s, Hal Putoff was the director of Stanford University's research institute 33:38.420 --> 33:43.420 He was testing psychic phenomena with algae and laser beams 33:43.420 --> 33:49.420 Until the psychic Ingo Swann contacted him offering himself as a test subject 33:49.420 --> 33:54.420 So I talked to my physics colleagues and they said, oh, these guys are all frauds and charlatans 33:54.420 --> 33:57.420 You better be careful, you better have a really good experiment 33:57.420 --> 34:03.420 We started doing some experiments of him seeing remote locations 34:03.420 --> 34:07.420 Anyway, I circulated around the results I was getting from these experiments 34:07.420 --> 34:12.420 And a few days later, the CIA shows up at my doorstep and they say, have we been looking for you? 34:13.420 --> 34:22.420 From 1972 to 1997, during the Cold War, the CIA funded what was known as the Stargate program 34:22.420 --> 34:26.420 To test if remote viewing could be used as an intelligence tool 34:27.420 --> 34:35.420 The very first, not talking about one out of a hundred, the very first Soviet facility we looked at 34:35.420 --> 34:38.420 Was over in the Soviet Union 34:38.420 --> 34:44.420 And it turned out our remote viewer, Pat Price in this case, drew a picture of a crane 34:44.420 --> 34:51.420 And he said, I'm lying on my back on top of a two-story building and this crane is rolling over my head 34:51.420 --> 34:56.420 And it's so large that a man is only half a wheel height 34:56.420 --> 35:00.420 Well, when he told me that, I thought that was ridiculous 35:00.420 --> 35:06.420 But in fact, it turns out that's exactly what the site was like 35:06.420 --> 35:12.420 I don't know if you can see here, but in fact, that little dot there is a man 35:13.420 --> 35:18.420 And so when we asked him, well, what do you think the site is used for? 35:18.420 --> 35:21.420 He said, well, I think it's for some space application 35:21.420 --> 35:26.420 It was only after the Cold War was over and people from our country got to visit the location 35:26.420 --> 35:29.420 We found out that in fact, this was for a space application 35:44.420 --> 35:49.420 The old-fashioned theory was that remote viewing had something to do with the brain 35:49.420 --> 35:54.420 Sending and receiving electromagnetic brain waves like a mental radio transmitter 35:55.420 --> 36:00.420 And so one way to attack that is to do experiments over longer and longer distances 36:00.420 --> 36:09.420 And we eventually did experiments over continents and didn't see any degradation of the apparent, quote, ESP data 36:09.420 --> 36:14.420 So distance didn't seem to matter, so that seemed to be a strike against the electromagnetic idea, the brainwave idea 36:14.420 --> 36:19.420 We then put people aboard submarines, took them down to the bottom of the ocean 36:19.420 --> 36:26.420 There's enough shielding of electromagnetic waves in seawater, conductive seawater, that that should have blocked it out 36:26.420 --> 36:33.420 In fact, the remote viewer said, oh, this is, quote, psychically quiet, I can do better than ever 36:45.420 --> 36:54.420 So the major area that we're looking at actually has to do with the fact that although empty space appears to be empty 36:54.420 --> 36:57.420 Quantum physicists know it's not really empty 36:57.420 --> 37:02.420 It's full of what we call quantum fluctuation energy or vacuum energy 37:02.420 --> 37:11.420 Howe thinks there is a mysterious energy pervading all empty space in the universe, including the cells of our body and our brains 37:11.420 --> 37:15.420 He calls it vacuum energy or zero-point energy 37:15.420 --> 37:21.420 It might connect us all, in which case it might explain remote viewing 37:21.420 --> 37:24.420 It's our liquid nitrogen tank 37:24.420 --> 37:29.420 The reason it's called zero-point energy is because it's a very small amount of energy 37:29.420 --> 37:32.420 It's a very small amount of liquid nitrogen tank 37:32.420 --> 37:39.420 The reason it's called zero-point energy is that even if you were to cool the universe all the way down to absolute zero 37:39.420 --> 37:44.420 Where all thermal motions get frozen out, this energy still exists 37:50.420 --> 37:55.420 Sometimes experiments led to finding, well, a very famous case 37:55.420 --> 38:01.420 A plane went down in Zaire, and because it crashed into the jungle, the satellites couldn't find it 38:01.420 --> 38:10.420 So Stansfield Turner, who was director of CIA at the time, turned to remote viewers and targeted on, well, where did this plane go down? 38:10.420 --> 38:16.420 In fact, we were able to find out and get in there and get the plane before the Russians did 38:16.420 --> 38:20.420 And so this was like a super, super deal 38:20.420 --> 38:23.420 I mean, this was briefed all the way to Carter from the White House 38:23.420 --> 38:26.420 We were told, you know, you'll never talk about this 38:26.420 --> 38:36.420 But then one time when President Carter, after he was out of office, was addressing a college group in Georgia 38:36.420 --> 38:42.420 Somebody asked him, well, what was one of the more strange things that happened as president, kind of unexpected? 38:42.420 --> 38:46.420 And he said, well, you know, once we lost a plane in Zaire and we couldn't find it 38:46.420 --> 38:50.420 And the CIA director turned to remote viewers and they found it 38:50.420 --> 38:52.420 And so that's how the story got out 38:54.420 --> 38:59.420 Was it just coincidence that former President Carter was on my plane the next day? 39:09.420 --> 39:18.420 After more than two decades of research and $20 million, the Cold War ended and the CIA program was shut down 39:18.420 --> 39:26.420 But word had gotten out, and today in the U.S., there are thousands of people practicing remote viewing professionally 39:26.420 --> 39:38.420 In 2003, in November, on the 3rd of November, I asked 47 people who had come to a college workshop that I taught on remote viewing 39:38.420 --> 39:41.420 They asked me, we want to do something important 39:41.420 --> 39:54.420 And so I asked them to describe for me where Saddam Hussein was and what he would look like when he was discovered by a coalition or United States troops 39:54.420 --> 39:59.420 What he would be wearing, who he'd be with, what the place would look like 39:59.420 --> 40:04.420 They each gave me their individual answers, which I then analyzed 40:04.420 --> 40:16.420 They had a consensus view, which was that Saddam Hussein would be discovered in a compound of a couple of houses near the city of Tikrit 40:16.420 --> 40:22.420 They said that there would be a road running in front of the house and a river would be behind it 40:22.420 --> 40:34.420 I did the analysis and I gave all the material over to the director of the university who had it notarized and put in a sealed envelope 40:34.420 --> 40:40.420 And put in a vault, which is where it resides to this day, and then we waited 40:40.420 --> 40:44.420 Ladies and gentlemen, we got him 40:44.420 --> 40:46.420 We got him 40:50.420 --> 40:57.420 The reconstruction of the vents as they would transpire on the 13th of December was highly accurate 40:57.420 --> 41:07.420 Here is the drawing that was released by the Pentagon, and again, you see here, they call it the spider hole, there he was down there 41:07.420 --> 41:13.420 Here's the vent pipe, just exactly the sort of thing that they described 41:14.420 --> 41:23.420 This is the air vent and a fan, exhaust fan, that had been built into the hole to allow him to remain underground 41:23.420 --> 41:33.420 Here's the building above, and here's the little hidden place, and he says here, here he is crouched down here, and here's the vent pipe 41:36.420 --> 41:38.420 It's like in a hidden chamber, it says 41:38.420 --> 41:50.420 Here's another one, and she has drawn this building with this funny little second story and with the big palm trees at either end of the building 41:50.420 --> 42:01.420 The funny little second story, well here's the actual building, this was released by the provisional authority, you know, that took over Iraq 42:02.420 --> 42:08.420 They said that he would only have two or three people with him, that he would look like a homeless person 42:08.420 --> 42:14.420 That he would have wild hair and wild salt and pepper beard, dressed in dark clothes 42:14.420 --> 42:24.420 That he would be dispirited and dejected and would put up no resistance, even though he would be armed, and that he would have a large quantity of money 42:25.420 --> 42:29.420 So you would have a good case to go and find Osama bin Laden? 42:29.420 --> 42:37.420 Well, I suppose one would have a good case if the CIA were soliciting input 42:37.420 --> 42:41.420 Do you know where Osama bin Laden is? 42:41.420 --> 42:46.420 I'm not answering a question like that on tape, it would get me killed 42:46.420 --> 42:59.420 If I sense something like that, I go to the authorities with that, I don't go publicly with that 42:59.420 --> 43:08.420 Philosopher and parapsychologist Stephen Schwartz of the Philosophical Research Society in Los Angeles 43:08.420 --> 43:16.420 He is determined to see that psychic archaeology is accepted as a modern scientific discipline 43:16.420 --> 43:19.420 He has researched accounts of psychic investment 43:19.420 --> 43:27.420 I am interested in the nature of consciousness, and I got interested in archaeology as one of the ways I do research 43:27.420 --> 43:31.420 Partly because so much of archaeology depends on luck 43:32.420 --> 43:38.420 Here's an example. We had a very skeptical archaeology department at the University of Alexandria 43:38.420 --> 43:45.420 And they said, well, we're not going to cooperate with you unless you can find something and we can control it all the way through 43:45.420 --> 43:53.420 And so they wanted to find a buried building in a buried city that had a tile floor 43:53.420 --> 43:58.420 So here's George McMullen and I, and we're out in the middle of the desert 43:58.420 --> 44:06.420 Where would you look? And we have to search about, I think it was about 1500 square kilometers 44:06.420 --> 44:12.420 Well, after a while, George made a location and then we had Ella do the same thing 44:12.420 --> 44:18.420 Then we bring George back in and we literally say to him, now you remember where we started, off in that big area 44:18.420 --> 44:23.420 Put a stake in the ground at the corners of the building 44:23.420 --> 44:27.420 Now think about that. You can't be more than a few inches off 44:27.420 --> 44:32.420 And so then we dug down and there you see the walls beginning to emerge 44:32.420 --> 44:36.420 He's 28 inches off out of 1500 square kilometers 44:40.420 --> 44:42.420 Come on, Fanger 44:43.420 --> 44:50.420 There is incontrovertible evidence that people have the capacity to access sense impressions 44:50.420 --> 44:59.420 And information that they could not know through the normal sensory channels 44:59.420 --> 45:05.420 And I believe that it is telling us that all consciousness is interdependent and interconnected 45:05.420 --> 45:11.420 Exactly what, for instance, the Buddhists and Hindus and others have been telling us for thousands of years 45:13.420 --> 45:15.420 What do you think of this? 45:15.420 --> 45:17.420 Oh, that's a good one 45:17.420 --> 45:22.420 A friend of mine was giving these kind of spoon bending parties 45:22.420 --> 45:28.420 And my little nine-year-old daughter, my eldest daughter, had this 45:28.420 --> 45:33.420 And she came back to me after a few minutes and she had curled up the bowl 45:35.420 --> 45:40.420 These other things happened and I went back to my home 45:40.420 --> 45:44.420 And a healer, a Tibetan healer, was living with me 45:44.420 --> 45:47.420 He said, do you want to see psychokinesis? 45:47.420 --> 45:49.420 And I said, well, of course 45:49.420 --> 45:51.420 So he said, take off your ring 45:51.420 --> 45:53.420 I took off my ring 45:55.420 --> 45:57.420 And I was like, what? 45:57.420 --> 46:00.420 And he said, well, I'm going to go see a doctor 46:00.420 --> 46:02.420 So he said, take off your ring 46:02.420 --> 46:04.420 I took off my ring 46:04.420 --> 46:06.420 Took off my ring 46:06.420 --> 46:08.420 He said, put it in your hand 46:08.420 --> 46:09.420 I did 46:09.420 --> 46:11.420 He said, hold your hand out 46:11.420 --> 46:14.420 He put that over my hand about three times 46:14.420 --> 46:16.420 And that's what my ring looked like after it 46:16.420 --> 46:19.420 Nothing was used, it wasn't even touched 46:19.420 --> 46:22.420 I just held it in my hand and he passed his hand over it 46:22.420 --> 46:27.420 Just this morning I was cleaning up my office 46:27.420 --> 46:30.420 And I was looking at this bent spoon 46:30.420 --> 46:36.420 Which was bent at a scientific conference that I was attending 46:36.420 --> 46:40.420 There wasn't anybody there who claimed to be psychic or anything 46:40.420 --> 46:44.420 But funny things happened to occur around this one psychiatrist 46:44.420 --> 46:48.420 And this is stuff that's very hard to bend, okay? 46:58.420 --> 47:03.420 If a six-year-old girl can bend a spoon at a spoon-bending party 47:03.420 --> 47:07.420 Then I needed to find a man who invented these parties 47:10.420 --> 47:14.420 Well, he had to use some force to get it to twist that way 47:14.420 --> 47:20.420 But it had to be pretty soft for him to be able to do it 47:20.420 --> 47:25.420 So it's partial, it's maybe 90% PK 47:25.420 --> 47:28.420 Welcome to the PK party 47:40.420 --> 47:42.420 Does everybody want to bend tonight? 47:42.420 --> 47:44.420 Yes! 47:44.420 --> 47:46.420 We're going to all do this together now 47:46.420 --> 47:50.420 Get a point of concentration above your head 47:50.420 --> 47:54.420 To do anything in PK, you need to do three things 47:54.420 --> 48:02.420 The first thing you do is you focus your mind on what you're trying to affect 48:02.420 --> 48:08.420 The second step, you command what you want, what your intention is 48:08.420 --> 48:11.420 And the third step is letting go 48:11.420 --> 48:15.420 And when I count to three, we'll all come together 48:15.420 --> 48:18.420 And the third step is letting go 48:18.420 --> 48:24.420 And when I count to three, we'll all command it forcefully to bend 48:24.420 --> 48:29.420 One, two, three, bend! 48:29.420 --> 48:33.420 Bend! Bend! Bend! 48:34.420 --> 48:36.420 Let it go 48:36.420 --> 48:40.420 I'm very skeptical about any large claims of this type 48:40.420 --> 48:44.420 And I went to something called a PK metal-bending party 48:44.420 --> 48:46.420 Where people get together to bend metal 48:46.420 --> 48:51.420 And my intention was to see somebody do something that could not be done 48:51.420 --> 48:55.420 Through the use of ordinary force, by trick or by any other means 48:55.420 --> 49:01.420 And what I was hoping to find was somebody who could take the bowl of a soup spoon and bend it in half 49:05.420 --> 49:08.420 So I knew a woman who was at this party 49:08.420 --> 49:11.420 And who had claimed to do things like this in the past 49:11.420 --> 49:14.420 I sat down within two feet of her, watching her carefully 49:14.420 --> 49:16.420 And I was holding a spoon of my own 49:16.420 --> 49:18.420 And it was mimicking what she was doing 49:18.420 --> 49:21.420 Just to get a kinesthetic feel for what was going on 49:21.420 --> 49:23.420 Buckle! 49:23.420 --> 49:25.420 Buckle, buckle, buckle 49:25.420 --> 49:28.420 I guess I've got to get my brain out of the way 49:28.420 --> 49:30.420 Absolutely 49:30.420 --> 49:34.420 So she was trying this for a couple of minutes and I was watching her intently 49:34.420 --> 49:37.420 And then somebody behind me said, look what you did 49:37.420 --> 49:39.420 And they were talking about me, what I had done 49:39.420 --> 49:44.420 And I said, well, I bent the bowl of the spoon about 90 degrees over 49:44.420 --> 49:48.420 And I immediately looked at my fingers to see if I had been applying pressure 49:48.420 --> 49:51.420 Because it would have let an indentation to do it 49:51.420 --> 49:53.420 And there wasn't any indication of that at all 49:53.420 --> 49:56.420 So someone said, well, bend it all the way 49:56.420 --> 49:57.420 I said, okay 49:57.420 --> 50:00.420 So I just pushed it with one finger and it just went all the way over 50:00.420 --> 50:04.420 It felt soft like taffy and pinched over 50:04.420 --> 50:08.420 And it immediately hardened up and it's been that way to this day 50:09.420 --> 50:10.420 Buckle! 50:10.420 --> 50:11.420 Buckle! 50:11.420 --> 50:12.420 Buckle! 50:12.420 --> 50:13.420 Buckle! 50:13.420 --> 50:14.420 Go ahead 50:17.420 --> 50:19.420 I need to do it for people 50:19.420 --> 50:21.420 No, I'd like to do it for myself 50:22.420 --> 50:24.420 Why is it so quiet? 50:28.420 --> 50:29.420 Do it 50:29.420 --> 50:30.420 Come on 50:30.420 --> 50:31.420 Do it 50:31.420 --> 50:32.420 Come on 50:32.420 --> 50:34.420 Go! 50:39.420 --> 50:55.420 I got my brain out of the way 50:55.420 --> 51:06.420 I don't know, just all of a sudden I was just in an intuitive feeling 51:06.420 --> 51:10.420 Kind of like if you make a jumper on a shot on the basketball court 51:10.420 --> 51:12.420 And you're playing a basketball game 51:12.420 --> 51:13.420 Something like that 51:13.420 --> 51:14.420 You have the zone 51:14.420 --> 51:15.420 Exactly 51:15.420 --> 51:18.420 I used to be able to get there a lot faster 51:24.420 --> 51:27.420 The problem with it from a scientific point of view is 51:27.420 --> 51:33.420 It's extremely difficult to capture this under conditions that are controlled well enough 51:33.420 --> 51:37.420 So that you can provide evidence to somebody else to show them that it looks like it's real 51:37.420 --> 51:39.420 Because I can't do that with my spoon 51:39.420 --> 51:40.420 And I don't even make the claim of that 51:40.420 --> 51:43.420 I don't expect anybody to believe it 51:43.420 --> 51:47.420 But I have my own experience now where I know I can believe it 51:47.420 --> 51:54.420 So when it comes to the rules of evidence and science it doesn't have much currency 51:54.420 --> 51:58.420 When it comes to a personal experience it has a lot of currency 51:58.420 --> 52:03.420 Psychokinesis, or in short PK, means mind over matter 52:03.420 --> 52:08.420 Can we humans, through the power of our minds intention, affect anything? 52:08.420 --> 52:13.420 Psychokinesis, the original classical experiments used dice 52:13.420 --> 52:20.420 They were triggered by a professional gambler who came into J.B. Ryan's laboratory at Duke University once 52:20.420 --> 52:25.420 And said, you know I'm a professional gambler and I shoot craps and I make a good living at it 52:25.420 --> 52:31.420 But I read this statistics book recently and I found that I can't possibly make the kind of living I do without cheating 52:31.420 --> 52:32.420 What's happening? 52:32.420 --> 52:39.420 And so they tested it and asked him to will certain dice face to come up that would make him win 52:39.420 --> 52:41.420 And he got them more often than chance 52:41.420 --> 52:47.420 And this evolved into a regular testing procedure where eventually machines would throw these dice 52:47.420 --> 52:51.420 While people were told, make the sixes come up this time, okay thank you 52:51.420 --> 52:53.420 Now make the fives come up this time 52:53.420 --> 52:59.420 And again people got scores different from chance enough to know that sometimes the mind can reach out 52:59.420 --> 53:03.420 And directly affect the state of matter in these rolling dice 53:03.420 --> 53:07.420 Nobody tests with dice nowadays, they use fancy electronic machines 53:07.420 --> 53:11.420 Which are even harder to imagine what in the world they could do 53:14.420 --> 53:19.420 Scientists have created ever more sophisticated methods of measuring chance 53:19.420 --> 53:22.420 First they built this machine 53:22.420 --> 53:28.420 It takes 9000 plastic marbles up a conveyor belt and then randomly drops them 53:28.420 --> 53:32.420 Normally they fall into a bell shaped curve 53:33.420 --> 53:37.420 So scientists asked everyday people, students and so forth 53:37.420 --> 53:42.420 To mentally will more balls to fall to the left or to fall to the right 53:42.420 --> 53:45.420 And they successfully managed to do so 53:47.420 --> 53:51.420 Then they did the same test with this swinging pendulum 53:51.420 --> 53:56.420 Again people were able to significantly increase or decrease its swing 53:56.420 --> 54:01.420 The issue is what kind of control do we have to know what's going on 54:01.420 --> 54:06.420 So in the laboratory rather than using spoons we'll use something more like a system 54:06.420 --> 54:11.420 Which is extremely sensitive to any type of external force like the movement of electrons 54:11.420 --> 54:18.420 So here we have a random number generator, you can see it's a fairly simple electrical circuit 54:18.420 --> 54:23.420 It goes through the serial port of a personal computer 54:23.420 --> 54:28.420 And all it's doing is randomly flipping coins about 10,000 a second 54:31.420 --> 54:35.420 Tests have shown that in some mysterious way 54:35.420 --> 54:40.420 The human mind can influence this little machine to produce more zeros or more ones 54:40.420 --> 54:45.420 And shift it ever so slightly away from its normal random course 54:49.420 --> 54:54.420 If one person can affect a random number generator 54:54.420 --> 54:58.420 Scientists then wanted to see what would happen with a group of people 55:00.420 --> 55:04.420 A lot of people who work in contexts that involve groups 55:04.420 --> 55:08.420 Choruses or sports or anything where you need to work with other people 55:08.420 --> 55:15.420 Occasionally will report episodes when there seems to be a flow in the group 55:15.420 --> 55:19.420 Or the whole group gets into the zone and it just works better 55:19.420 --> 55:23.420 It works like a single organism and it feels good too 55:23.420 --> 55:26.420 And the question is what is that? 55:26.420 --> 55:30.420 Did something happen psychologically that connected people or something else? 55:30.420 --> 55:35.420 So one possibility is that the group actually does gel in a way 55:35.420 --> 55:38.420 It's almost as though it becomes a single organism 55:38.420 --> 55:44.420 As though there's a moment in which you have random things that sort of come together into a kind of order 55:45.420 --> 55:50.420 So, late 1997, myself and a few others were talking about these experiments 55:50.420 --> 55:55.420 And saying, well, wouldn't it be interesting if we could measure the entire world during large scale events? 55:55.420 --> 56:00.420 This was after the funeral of Princess Diana, which was a worldwide event 56:00.420 --> 56:05.420 And there are many more of these now because of the way the media works 56:05.420 --> 56:11.420 We figured if we had random number generators located around the world running 24 hours a day 56:11.420 --> 56:15.420 That we may find that there's a change in the randomness 56:15.420 --> 56:21.420 During periods in which people are paying very close attention to one thing as compared to other times 56:24.420 --> 56:27.420 And so we've now been running this for some years 56:27.420 --> 56:30.420 And we've been doing this for a long time 56:31.420 --> 56:34.420 And so we've now been running this for some years 56:34.420 --> 56:37.420 We've had over 200 events so far 56:37.420 --> 56:43.420 And the odds against chance of the change in randomness that we see is about a million to one 56:49.420 --> 56:52.420 And so they discovered something amazing 56:52.420 --> 56:57.420 Large group events can mysteriously influence these random number generators 56:57.420 --> 57:01.420 Causing them to veer off their usual random course 57:01.420 --> 57:07.420 This is Roger Nelson, who was involved in the earliest mind over matter experiments 57:07.420 --> 57:12.420 Based here at Princeton University, it was he who organized his scientist friends 57:12.420 --> 57:17.420 Into collecting random number generator data from around the world 57:17.420 --> 57:20.420 Thus was born the Global Consciousness Project 57:20.420 --> 57:26.420 So we have a huge database now that includes events like New Year's every year 57:26.420 --> 57:32.420 When people gather, millions and millions of people, maybe billions actually, celebrate New Year's 57:41.420 --> 57:50.420 And people start counting down, they actually focus all together on this very abstract moment 57:50.420 --> 57:55.420 So what we see in the data, just consider that we've got a wandering data line that's a composite 57:55.420 --> 57:59.420 Across all the time zones and all of the REGs 57:59.420 --> 58:03.420 The data wander randomly until about five minutes before midnight 58:03.420 --> 58:09.420 And then the variability decreases and it minimizes around midnight 58:09.420 --> 58:11.420 And then comes back up and becomes normal again 58:11.420 --> 58:16.420 So we have a period of about, I think it's on the order of 10 minutes, around midnight 58:16.420 --> 58:18.420 That looks different from random 58:18.420 --> 58:23.420 And this is consistent enough from year to year that it's significant 58:27.420 --> 58:32.420 And we now have a continuous record of 65 roughly of these devices 58:32.420 --> 58:36.420 Producing data from random event generators scattered around the world 58:36.420 --> 58:40.420 24 hours a day, seven days a week for years 58:40.420 --> 58:43.420 This is a little loud, we'll have to turn it off very quickly 58:43.420 --> 58:54.420 But the size of the bar and the loudness of the sound is an indication of the noise level at the particular instrument 58:54.420 --> 59:01.420 Like here's one in Princeton, here's one in Holland, right here, number 1000 59:01.420 --> 59:03.420 That's a very big deviation 59:03.420 --> 59:06.420 Okay, I'm glad you got one of those 59:13.420 --> 59:16.420 Now there are all kinds of events 59:16.420 --> 59:20.420 There are tragedies, there are wars start and wars end 59:20.420 --> 59:24.420 And there are religious celebrations of various kinds 59:24.420 --> 59:28.420 And we have found that if there are large numbers 59:28.420 --> 59:33.420 And that means something like many hundreds of thousands in most cases or millions 59:33.420 --> 59:36.420 Who become engaged in the same thing 59:36.420 --> 59:39.420 In the same way that we do in the world 59:39.420 --> 59:44.420 And if there are large numbers or millions who become engaged in the same thing 59:44.420 --> 59:49.420 In other words, they kind of all point the same direction mentally and emotionally 59:49.420 --> 59:53.420 Then we register something in our data 59:53.420 --> 59:56.420 Right here, stop, stop 01:00:01.420 --> 01:00:07.420 Gradually we come to understand that things that provoke or embody or evoke compassion 01:00:07.420 --> 01:00:11.420 And love, deep feelings of connectedness 01:00:11.420 --> 01:00:15.420 The kind of thing that really does represent the interconnection of people 01:00:15.420 --> 01:00:19.420 Those are the things that produce most reliably 01:00:19.420 --> 01:00:23.420 Big effects in our global consciousness data 01:00:34.420 --> 01:00:39.420 This is a memorial to the people from Princeton who were killed on 9-11 01:00:39.420 --> 01:00:43.420 There are 13 of them with their names inscribed around there 01:00:43.420 --> 01:00:47.420 I love the bell, it has a beautiful sound 01:00:47.420 --> 01:00:51.420 These are the names 01:00:51.420 --> 01:00:56.420 13 people and Princeton is just such a little place 01:01:07.420 --> 01:01:10.420 Mostly we're just randomly related to each other 01:01:10.420 --> 01:01:14.420 On 9-11 we were in New York, we were in New York City 01:01:14.420 --> 01:01:17.420 We were just randomly related to each other 01:01:17.420 --> 01:01:20.420 On 9-11 we were not randomly related 01:01:20.420 --> 01:01:26.420 We were focused together on something that was shocking 01:01:26.420 --> 01:01:30.420 Completely unbelievable 01:01:30.420 --> 01:01:36.420 It was just such a massive event in our mental, emotional space 01:01:37.420 --> 01:01:41.420 How many other countries lost citizens here? 01:01:41.420 --> 01:01:44.420 Some think it was just Americans, that's not true 01:01:44.420 --> 01:01:49.420 83 other countries from around the world lost citizens here 01:01:49.420 --> 01:01:56.420 I look for the ones who don't understand that Ground Zero looked like that on 9-11 01:01:56.420 --> 01:02:00.420 So here's what the variance did 01:02:00.420 --> 01:02:03.420 If you draw a picture of the day 01:02:03.420 --> 01:02:09.420 of this variance which should normally just wander as a kind of level trace 01:02:09.420 --> 01:02:14.420 we get starting several hours, about 4 or 5 hours before the first plane hit 01:02:14.420 --> 01:02:19.420 there's a huge change where the variance increases tremendously 01:02:19.420 --> 01:02:22.420 and persistently for 6 or 8 hours 01:02:22.420 --> 01:02:26.420 after which it then decreases by a similar amount 01:02:26.420 --> 01:02:31.420 so we have a kind of a spike in this variance measure on 9-11 01:02:31.420 --> 01:02:35.420 that's actually unique in the history up to that time 01:02:35.420 --> 01:02:42.420 and it looks like the system responded almost as if it was really feeling the emotions 01:02:42.420 --> 01:02:45.420 and somehow responding to the tragedy of the day 01:02:45.420 --> 01:02:48.420 as people all over the world were doing 01:02:48.420 --> 01:02:51.420 We became one 01:02:51.420 --> 01:02:55.420 Wake up now, grab a map, learn the facts 01:02:55.420 --> 01:02:57.420 It's free, it's free, it's free 01:02:57.420 --> 01:03:00.420 Mostly we're just randomly related to each other 01:03:00.420 --> 01:03:05.420 On 9-11 we couldn't do anything but be together 01:03:05.420 --> 01:03:09.420 Say nothing is sane, and get the facts 01:03:09.420 --> 01:03:12.420 There are lots of mysteries in our data 01:03:12.420 --> 01:03:15.420 It begins to change about 4 or 5 o'clock in the morning 01:03:15.420 --> 01:03:19.420 and that's 4 or 5 hours before the first plane hit 01:03:19.420 --> 01:03:23.420 Dean Radin's work is about pre-sentiment 01:03:23.420 --> 01:03:27.420 There are beautiful experiments that show in human beings 01:03:27.420 --> 01:03:32.420 a few seconds of pre-sentiment before powerful emotional events 01:03:32.420 --> 01:03:36.420 So maybe the global consciousness had a pre-sentiment 01:03:36.420 --> 01:03:43.420 about this tremendous tragic or traumatic event in global consciousness 01:03:43.420 --> 01:03:48.420 This is purely what people call hand-waving speculation 01:03:48.420 --> 01:03:54.420 but I think that it may be possible each of us has what you might call a consciousness field 01:03:54.420 --> 01:03:58.420 is that our minds are not confined to our heads 01:03:58.420 --> 01:04:01.420 They extend out into the world 01:04:06.420 --> 01:04:10.420 Our consciousness is not confined to our minds 01:04:11.420 --> 01:04:15.420 Our consciousness fields, if there is such a thing, 01:04:15.420 --> 01:04:20.420 could be a source for the information that could be absorbed, 01:04:20.420 --> 01:04:27.420 could affect an REG and change its behavior if we come together as a global mind 01:04:31.420 --> 01:04:35.420 The facts we're talking about are not really going to be useful 01:04:35.420 --> 01:04:39.420 for trying to open your garage door or change your television channel 01:04:39.420 --> 01:04:42.420 but the implications are powerful 01:04:44.420 --> 01:04:50.420 We are connected not only with each other but with the environment that we live in 01:04:53.420 --> 01:04:56.420 David Bohm, who's a highly respected physicist, 01:04:56.420 --> 01:05:02.420 who talked about the implicate order and a kind of different way of looking at quantum mechanics, 01:05:02.420 --> 01:05:06.420 he spoke of a special kind of information 01:05:06.420 --> 01:05:12.420 He says this special kind of information is virtual normally, but it's universal 01:05:12.420 --> 01:05:15.420 It's extended indefinitely in time and space 01:05:15.420 --> 01:05:18.420 It's what people call non-local information 01:05:18.420 --> 01:05:26.420 And we think that is the same kind of information that is responsible for the interconnection of human beings 01:05:26.420 --> 01:05:28.420 or of us with our environment 01:05:28.420 --> 01:05:32.420 The same kind of information that makes a difference to the REGs 01:05:33.420 --> 01:05:41.420 This active information can be actualized, can become real in the world if there's a need for it 01:05:41.420 --> 01:05:46.420 An example that's pretty easy for most people to accept is healing 01:05:46.420 --> 01:05:53.420 The healer has the information, the healer needs it, and the two create a kind of opportunity 01:06:02.420 --> 01:06:05.420 The healing process 01:06:12.420 --> 01:06:18.420 Via a friend, I heard about a woman who was miraculously cured through a psychic healing in Brazil 01:06:18.420 --> 01:06:26.420 I was very ill. I'd had three bowel resection operations that had failed 01:06:27.420 --> 01:06:36.420 And I ended up with a leaking bowel, which affected me very badly in the fact that I had a lot of toxins in my system 01:06:36.420 --> 01:06:44.420 I had a lot of skin problems, open sores all over, and I was desperate. I was absolutely desperate 01:06:44.420 --> 01:06:49.420 I heard of John of God in Brazil, and I went over there 01:06:49.420 --> 01:06:53.420 And seven months after her return, she was completely cured 01:06:53.420 --> 01:07:01.420 My liver was completely healed, the cells had regenerated, my colon was functioning for the first time in my life 01:07:01.420 --> 01:07:09.420 I heard so much about it, and when this patient of mine came back, I thought I'd really like to see what's going on 01:07:11.420 --> 01:07:15.420 John of God works for free. He says he is a spirit medium 01:07:15.420 --> 01:07:22.420 He goes into a trance, and spirit entities work through him to enable him to operate on his patients 01:07:23.420 --> 01:07:28.420 He's very open to medical people or doctors watching close up what he does 01:07:28.420 --> 01:07:31.420 And they actually ask if there's a doctor in the audience anywhere 01:07:31.420 --> 01:07:39.420 So it was myself and a lady from Germany, and I filmed some of the surgeries from close up, from, say, one metre away 01:07:39.420 --> 01:07:47.420 In the 20 odd years that he's been working in the Casa, he works with his bare hands 01:07:48.420 --> 01:07:53.420 And he uses a knife, like an ordinary kitchen knife, that's definitely not sterile 01:07:53.420 --> 01:07:57.420 He hasn't had one case of infection, not one 01:07:57.420 --> 01:08:03.420 I haven't heard anybody scream, so there's no pain, or relatively very little discomfort 01:08:06.420 --> 01:08:13.420 The surgery that he does up the nose, with the forceps, the long forceps, it goes right to the back of the sinus 01:08:14.420 --> 01:08:19.420 And he would twist the forceps around and he would actually pull out a tumour 01:08:21.420 --> 01:08:24.420 Yeah, I don't know how to explain that 01:08:24.420 --> 01:08:28.420 That you don't cause tremendous damages beyond any belief 01:08:29.420 --> 01:08:34.420 I know this is a controversial issue, but would you send a patient to a psychic healer? 01:08:34.420 --> 01:08:42.420 Well, when the patient's being told by the specialist that there's nothing more they can do for him or her 01:08:42.420 --> 01:08:46.420 then I feel I can actually suggest something like that 01:08:46.420 --> 01:08:50.420 You know, it's not important to me exactly how it happens or why it happens 01:08:50.420 --> 01:08:53.420 or to find intellectual explanations, because you won't 01:08:54.420 --> 01:09:00.420 Anything that you do that will bring about healing that's not harmful, I will support 01:09:13.420 --> 01:09:21.420 Throughout the history of mankind, many spiritual healing methods have been based on the transference of a universal, all-pervading energy 01:09:22.420 --> 01:09:28.420 The Chinese call it qi, the Japanese ki, and the Indians call it prana 01:09:29.420 --> 01:09:35.420 They say this life force runs deep in our bodies through invisible lines called meridians 01:09:42.420 --> 01:09:45.420 In China they practice qigong 01:09:46.420 --> 01:09:51.420 They say this works the life force energy, promotes health, and prevents disease 01:09:53.420 --> 01:09:57.420 The Chinese say illness occurs when there's a blockage of energy 01:09:59.420 --> 01:10:05.420 Here at a hospital in China, students use qigong to make a cancerous tumour disappear 01:10:12.420 --> 01:10:16.420 The Chinese call it qigong 01:10:16.420 --> 01:10:20.420 The Chinese call it meridians 01:10:20.420 --> 01:10:24.420 The Chinese call it qigong 01:10:24.420 --> 01:10:28.420 The Chinese call it meridians 01:10:28.420 --> 01:10:32.420 The Chinese call it meridians 01:10:32.420 --> 01:10:36.420 The Chinese call it meridians 01:10:36.420 --> 01:10:40.420 The Chinese call it meridians 01:10:40.420 --> 01:10:44.420 The Chinese call it meridians 01:10:44.420 --> 01:10:48.420 The Chinese call it meridians 01:10:48.420 --> 01:10:52.420 The Chinese call it meridians 01:10:52.420 --> 01:10:56.420 The Chinese call it meridians 01:10:56.420 --> 01:11:01.420 The Chinese are not too caught up in theories about how qigong healing might work 01:11:01.420 --> 01:11:05.420 They say the intellect can't understand how it works 01:11:05.420 --> 01:11:09.420 More importantly, than how it works is what it does 01:11:09.420 --> 01:11:13.420 But in Western science, we don't think like that 01:11:13.420 --> 01:11:17.420 We want to analyze and prove these mysterious things 01:11:17.420 --> 01:11:21.420 We want to analyze and prove these mysterious things 01:11:21.420 --> 01:11:25.420 We want to analyze and prove these mysterious things 01:11:25.420 --> 01:11:34.420 At the University of Arizona, Professor Gary Schwartz and his team are doing scientific research into consciousness and healing 01:11:34.420 --> 01:11:48.420 I began as an electrical engineer, and I understand how literally our anatomy, we serve as an antenna for electromagnetic signals, and we also generate electromagnetic signals 01:11:48.420 --> 01:12:00.420 And once you think of the body in terms of electronics and electromagnetic fields and resonance and interaction, the whole idea of energy healing becomes completely plausible 01:12:03.420 --> 01:12:14.420 After my breast cancer surgery, when I had a lumpectomy and some lymph nodes removed, and I was in so much pain, I thought at the time I'd never known pain like that in my entire life 01:12:14.420 --> 01:12:22.420 And they had given me tons of morphine, tons of every kind of drug, I'm allergic to all kinds of medicines, and nothing was touching it 01:12:22.420 --> 01:12:29.420 And Rebecca showed up, and I don't believe you left for two hours, did you? You were there for two hours, weren't you? 01:12:29.420 --> 01:12:31.420 About that, yeah 01:12:31.420 --> 01:12:39.420 But within five minutes, with therapeutic touch, we were able to get her pain level to nothing 01:12:39.420 --> 01:12:45.420 We're not doing the healing, but we are facilitating it, we're the conduits 01:12:45.420 --> 01:13:00.420 Generally, it's just universal energy, and the way that it is for me is I draw the energy through my crown, filling my body with this calm sense of peace, love, coming from a place of compassion 01:13:00.420 --> 01:13:11.420 The energy, the hands and heart are connected, the energy then flows through the heart, through the hands, to the individual 01:13:11.420 --> 01:13:20.420 We have electromagnetic signals running between our brains and our bodies that circulate through the liquids in our bodies 01:13:20.420 --> 01:13:25.420 It turns out that the blood, for example, is a very good conductor of electricity 01:13:25.420 --> 01:13:34.420 And that's why, for example, the energy from the heart, literally the electrical energy from the heart of the EKG, can be picked up from any part of the body 01:13:34.420 --> 01:13:38.420 Because the electrical signal from the heart goes down to the toes, to the top of the head 01:13:38.420 --> 01:13:45.420 By the way, it's the same thing with the brain, the brain generates an EEG, that EEG signal travels throughout the bloodstream, and you can easily measure that 01:13:45.420 --> 01:13:57.420 Professor Schwartz found evidence that healers emit highly ordered, invisible light waves and produce an extra surge of electrostatic energy 01:13:57.420 --> 01:14:08.420 This is an AC gauss meter, AC gauss meters are an extremely standard piece of equipment, and in particular we're looking at a thing called the universal chi point 01:14:09.420 --> 01:14:14.420 And the universal chi point is about here in the hand 01:14:14.420 --> 01:14:23.420 That chi point was actually well understood in Chinese medicine, there is an equivalent, for example, in Ayurveda 01:14:23.420 --> 01:14:30.420 There are equivalents in many of the, for example, the ancient Celtic traditions of laying on of hands healing 01:14:30.420 --> 01:14:36.420 So that point in esoteric knowledge is well recognized and understood 01:14:38.420 --> 01:14:42.420 In our laboratory we have done many different kinds of experiments 01:14:42.420 --> 01:14:48.420 We've measured the effects of energy healing on E. coli bacteria, bacteria in test tubes 01:14:48.420 --> 01:14:55.420 We've looked at the effects of energy healing such as Reiki on rats that were stressed with noise 01:14:55.420 --> 01:15:00.420 And actually measured the effects of energy healing on the body 01:15:00.420 --> 01:15:07.420 We've looked at the effects of energy healing such as Reiki on rats that were stressed with noise 01:15:07.420 --> 01:15:11.420 And actually measuring the microvascular changes in their gut 01:15:11.420 --> 01:15:16.420 We've known for years now that the power of belief is very strong in healing 01:15:16.420 --> 01:15:24.420 Tests with placebo medicines have shown that 33% of all people are healed because they believe they will be 01:15:31.420 --> 01:15:38.420 However, these tests with Reiki on rats prove the point that belief aside, Reiki works 01:15:38.420 --> 01:15:41.420 Because who knows what rats believe 01:15:41.420 --> 01:15:49.420 We've done experiments on the effects of healing on the longevity of leaves that have been cut 01:15:49.420 --> 01:15:54.420 Please do not work on the control leaf at any time in this process 01:15:54.420 --> 01:15:58.420 No matter how it feels inside, I need you to hold that very cleanly 01:16:00.420 --> 01:16:05.420 This is a complete trial that's ongoing at this point 01:16:05.420 --> 01:16:11.420 Leaves that are at day 58 in the ongoing process 01:16:11.420 --> 01:16:17.420 They have received four 10-minute healings every 24 hours 01:16:17.420 --> 01:16:22.420 You'll notice there are a number of control leaves that are being treated 01:16:22.420 --> 01:16:27.420 We did in this particular trial, we had one practitioner drop out 01:16:27.420 --> 01:16:32.420 The other nine pairs, all of the leaves are still alive 01:16:32.420 --> 01:16:37.420 We didn't know how long this process would last, and today is day 58 01:16:37.420 --> 01:16:44.420 And of this particular trial, and of this particular trial, and of this particular trial, and of this particular trial 01:16:44.420 --> 01:16:49.420 We didn't know how long this process would last, and today is day 58 01:16:49.420 --> 01:17:19.420 And of this particular trial, and of this particular trial, and of this particular trial, and of this particular trial, and of this particular trial, and of this particular trial, and of this particular trial, and of this particular trial, and of this particular trial, and of this particular trial, and of this particular trial, and of this particular trial, and of this particular trial, and of this particular trial, and of this particular trial, and of this particular trial, and of this particular trial, and of this particular trial, and of this particular trial, and of this particular trial, and of this particular trial, and of this particular trial, and of this particular trial, and of this particular trial, and of this particular trial, and of this particular trial, and of this particular trial, and of this particular trial, and of this particular trial, and of this particular trial, and of this particular trial, and of this particular trial, and of this particular trial, and of this particular trial, and of this particular trial, and of this particular trial, and of this particular trial 01:17:19.420 --> 01:17:49.420 and of this particular trial, and of this particular trial, and of this particular trial, and of this particular trial, and of this particular trial, and of this particular trial, and of this particular trial, and of this particular trial, and of this particular trial, and of this particular trial, and of this particular trial, and of this particular trial, and of this particular trial, and of this particular trial, and of this particular trial, and of this particular trial, and of this particular trial, and of this particular trial, and of this particular trial, and of this particular trial, and of this particular trial, and of this particular trial, and of this particular trial, and of this particular trial, and of this particular trial, and of this particular trial, and of this particular trial, and of this particular trial, and of this particular trial, and of this particular trial, and of this particular trial, and of this particular trial, and of this particular trial, and of this particular trial, and of this particular trial, and of this particular trial, and of this particular trial 01:17:49.420 --> 01:17:56.420 I listen, I feel, I bring my hands in until I get a sense of something. I feel it, I refine it into the center of my palm. 01:17:56.420 --> 01:18:02.420 I feel it, I refine it into the center of my palm. Maybe I pull out, feel the interesting sensation of the draw, 01:18:02.420 --> 01:18:10.420 the stretching against me inside of the palm and back, and I simply play with it, and I observe how the people's bodies respond as I feel. 01:18:11.420 --> 01:18:18.420 There's a beautiful confluence of the energies, or more than the energies, of the frequencies and beyond that come together and create something more. 01:18:18.420 --> 01:18:22.420 There's a beautiful confluence of the energies, or more than the energies, of the frequencies and beyond that come together and create something more. 01:18:22.420 --> 01:18:29.420 It's more than being just a conduit. We're actually a catalyst for change. 01:18:29.420 --> 01:18:36.420 This arm goes like this, heading into the arm, the little teapot thing, for each other. 01:18:36.420 --> 01:18:43.420 Applause 01:18:43.420 --> 01:18:50.420 And in all these different areas and preparations, we find evidence for the power of intention. 01:18:50.420 --> 01:19:02.420 And the focusing of one's attention with that intention seems to be an important parameter in terms of determining the magnitude of the effects that are obtained. 01:19:03.420 --> 01:19:08.420 Sure. Actually, I want to see the other one. It's actually looser than the other one. 01:19:14.420 --> 01:19:25.420 We've done experiments on the effects of distant healing on the biophoton release or inhibition that occurs in plants. 01:19:25.420 --> 01:19:30.420 It turns out that all living things generate invisible light that is invisible to the naked eye. 01:19:30.420 --> 01:19:36.420 And it turns out that a healer can actually affect or increase or decrease the amount of light that's taking place. 01:19:36.420 --> 01:19:39.420 Do you take the leaves home? No, the leaves stay here and I go home. 01:19:39.420 --> 01:19:48.420 And then I spend the next X number of days running the energy for 10 minutes, four times a day. 01:19:48.420 --> 01:20:00.420 We just completed an experiment where a group of 400 plus people in London saw one of two leaves in Tucson. 01:20:00.420 --> 01:20:12.420 We did not know which leaf was picked. Each leaf, a geranium leaf, had 16 holes in it, 16 spots where the intention to glow might enhance it. 01:20:12.420 --> 01:20:21.420 And then for 10 minutes, one of those two leaves were picked and they watched on the screen the leaf and sent glowing instructions to the leaf. 01:20:21.420 --> 01:20:29.420 And then when we analyzed the data, much to my great surprise, not only was the leaf that was picked for the glowing instructions, 01:20:29.420 --> 01:20:33.420 could you see literally the spots where the injuries occur were literally glowing more. 01:20:33.420 --> 01:20:38.420 You could see it with the naked eye between the two images that there was an effect on. 01:20:38.420 --> 01:20:43.420 This is a photograph of photonic emissions from a human fingertip. 01:20:43.420 --> 01:20:47.420 Light is present in plants and all beings. 01:20:47.420 --> 01:21:06.760 The human finger is a 01:21:06.760 --> 01:21:09.760 source of energy. 01:21:09.760 --> 01:21:14.760 When we eat, we take in tiny light particles called photons. 01:21:14.760 --> 01:21:18.760 We store these photons in the cells of our bodies. 01:21:18.760 --> 01:21:21.760 Photons are quantum particles of light. 01:21:21.760 --> 01:21:27.760 They collide, exchange information, bounce apart and stay mysteriously connected at a distance. 01:21:27.760 --> 01:21:32.760 In quantum physics, this is called entanglement. 01:21:32.760 --> 01:21:36.760 I wonder, is this how healing and distant healing works? 01:21:36.760 --> 01:21:41.760 I would say that when you look at the totality of our research combined with other people's research, 01:21:41.760 --> 01:21:48.760 the conclusion is quite clear that healing can occur at a distance, that consciousness can have effects at a distance. 01:21:48.760 --> 01:21:55.760 How that works and the conditions under that work, that's another question. 01:21:55.760 --> 01:22:02.760 Many universities are skeptical of this kind of work, and there are many faculty within my own university that are skeptical of this research. 01:22:02.760 --> 01:22:09.760 However, the fact is that this work is funded by NIH, the National Institutes of Health. 01:22:09.760 --> 01:22:13.760 It's published in peer-reviewed journals. 01:22:13.760 --> 01:22:19.760 The studies are very carefully conducted, and the findings are very robust. They are real. 01:22:19.760 --> 01:22:27.760 What I find fantastic is just with, quote, normal energies, just normal radioelectromagnetics and normal light frequencies, 01:22:27.760 --> 01:22:32.760 we've got more than enough power to be able to communicate from one side of the planet to the other, 01:22:32.760 --> 01:22:35.760 and to be able to do so, quote, virtually instantaneously. 01:22:35.760 --> 01:22:42.760 So just working within, quote, conventional physics, and then add quantum physics, 01:22:43.760 --> 01:22:50.760 you've already got all kinds of power for virtually every psychic phenomena that's ever been reported. 01:22:59.760 --> 01:23:05.760 I am on my way to Dr. Larry Dossi, who comes from a traditional Western medicine background. 01:23:06.760 --> 01:23:13.760 However, he has become internationally renowned for advocating the role of spirituality in health care. 01:23:19.760 --> 01:23:22.760 He lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico. 01:23:22.760 --> 01:23:28.760 I was in Vietnam as a battalion surgeon in 1968, 1969, 01:23:28.760 --> 01:23:35.760 and was out in the front lines and saw a good deal of combat experience 01:23:35.760 --> 01:23:41.760 and a lot of blood and gore as a battalion surgeon. 01:23:41.760 --> 01:23:50.760 And so I was awarded medals for my participation as a surgeon in that conflict. 01:23:51.760 --> 01:24:00.760 Beginning in my first year of medical practice, I saw a particular case which changed my way of thinking about these things. 01:24:00.760 --> 01:24:05.760 I had a patient who was elderly. He had lung cancer in both lungs. 01:24:05.760 --> 01:24:11.760 He was dying. He was dying of a heart attack. 01:24:11.760 --> 01:24:13.760 He was dying of a heart attack. 01:24:13.760 --> 01:24:18.760 I had a patient who was elderly. He had lung cancer in both lungs. 01:24:18.760 --> 01:24:26.760 He was dying. He did not want any treatment, and at that time there was no good treatment anyway. 01:24:26.760 --> 01:24:30.760 All he wanted to do was to go home from the hospital to die at home. 01:24:30.760 --> 01:24:33.760 The only treatment he had, if you can consider it therapy, 01:24:33.760 --> 01:24:40.760 is that people from his church came to his bedside day after day and prayed for him. 01:24:40.760 --> 01:24:47.760 So I sent him home as he wanted to do, and I was convinced that he would be dead in a couple of days. 01:24:47.760 --> 01:24:50.760 A year later, I couldn't believe he was still alive. 01:24:50.760 --> 01:24:54.760 I went down to the radiology department, looked at his new chest x-ray, 01:24:54.760 --> 01:24:59.760 put it alongside the old one, which had lung cancer throughout, but the new one was normal. 01:24:59.760 --> 01:25:04.760 The only therapy this man had had, if you consider it that, was prayer. 01:25:04.760 --> 01:25:07.760 And I was astonished by that. 01:25:07.760 --> 01:25:11.760 I, at that point in my life, was not ready to accept that prayer did anything. 01:25:11.760 --> 01:25:15.760 I just called it a spontaneous remission and let it go at that. 01:25:15.760 --> 01:25:18.760 But that was seared into my brain, and I couldn't forget it. 01:25:18.760 --> 01:25:22.760 And years later, when the studies came out supporting prayer, 01:25:22.760 --> 01:25:28.760 I thought back about that and began to ask questions about that. 01:25:28.760 --> 01:25:34.760 I began to look at surveys of patients whose diseases simply went away. 01:25:34.760 --> 01:25:37.760 And one of the questions that these patients were asked was, 01:25:37.760 --> 01:25:42.760 what do you think accounted for the disappearance of your illness? 01:25:42.760 --> 01:25:47.760 Most of these people would say, well, it had something to do with my thought, 01:25:47.760 --> 01:25:51.760 the way I chose to live my life. 01:25:51.760 --> 01:25:56.760 Most of them would list some sort of spiritual practice, such as prayer. 01:25:56.760 --> 01:26:00.760 Seventy-five percent say that prayer accounted for why they got well. 01:26:00.760 --> 01:26:05.760 But others would list things like music, doing mental imagery. 01:26:05.760 --> 01:26:09.760 It's almost embarrassing about the variety of things people describe. 01:26:30.760 --> 01:26:34.760 Skeptics say there is no evidence. This is profoundly wrong. 01:26:34.760 --> 01:26:39.760 Currently, there are about 21 major, what we call, randomized, 01:26:39.760 --> 01:26:45.760 double-blind, controlled studies looking at the role of healing intentions 01:26:45.760 --> 01:26:50.760 or prayer, if you will, and the role of healing intentions or prayer, 01:26:50.760 --> 01:26:53.760 and the role of healing intentions or prayer, 01:26:53.760 --> 01:26:56.760 and the role of healing intentions or prayer, 01:26:56.760 --> 01:27:00.760 or the role of healing intentions or prayer, if you will. 01:27:00.760 --> 01:27:03.760 People call this by different terms. 01:27:03.760 --> 01:27:06.760 Obviously, in the Western world, most people associate prayer 01:27:06.760 --> 01:27:09.760 with a religion and with a deity. 01:27:09.760 --> 01:27:14.760 But this is not true if you look at other spiritual traditions around the world. 01:27:26.760 --> 01:27:29.760 Music 01:27:47.760 --> 01:27:51.760 Built in the early 1800s, the Santuario de Chimayo, 01:27:51.760 --> 01:27:54.760 it's about 30 miles north of here. 01:27:54.760 --> 01:27:58.760 It's a place that's a tribute, all sorts of healing powers to 01:27:58.760 --> 01:28:03.760 not the water as it lures, but to the dirt outside this little church. 01:28:03.760 --> 01:28:06.760 So people go and they get the dirt, 01:28:06.760 --> 01:28:10.760 and they rub it over the area of the body that needs healing. 01:28:10.760 --> 01:28:14.760 I was at the little church one day, and a woman came in, 01:28:14.760 --> 01:28:18.760 an elderly Hispanic woman. We struck up a conversation, 01:28:18.760 --> 01:28:22.760 and she told me how years before, she had come there in a wheelchair. 01:28:22.760 --> 01:28:26.760 And she prayed to the Virgin of Guadalupe, 01:28:26.760 --> 01:28:29.760 and something happened, and she was able to get out of her wheelchair 01:28:29.760 --> 01:28:31.760 and walk away. 01:28:31.760 --> 01:28:34.760 So she left her wheelchair there in gratitude, 01:28:34.760 --> 01:28:38.760 like people leave crutches at Lourdes and so on. 01:28:38.760 --> 01:28:41.760 And so she made an annual pilgrimage every year 01:28:41.760 --> 01:28:45.760 to express gratitude for her healing. 01:28:45.760 --> 01:28:47.760 She just took it as a matter of fact. 01:28:47.760 --> 01:28:49.760 She wasn't surprised. 01:28:49.760 --> 01:28:53.760 Many people here who have fantastic faith in the Virgin 01:28:53.760 --> 01:28:57.760 think that this just sort of goes with the territory. 01:29:02.760 --> 01:29:06.760 Actually, the prevalent idea is that good doctors, 01:29:06.760 --> 01:29:10.760 scientifically oriented doctors, don't believe any of this. 01:29:10.760 --> 01:29:13.760 That happens to be a false picture. 01:29:13.760 --> 01:29:17.760 We know that because of surveys that have been recently done. 01:29:17.760 --> 01:29:20.760 The first one came three years ago, 01:29:20.760 --> 01:29:24.760 and it looked at over 1,000 physicians around the United States 01:29:24.760 --> 01:29:30.760 asking them their beliefs about prayer, remote healing, and so on. 01:29:30.760 --> 01:29:34.760 Seventy-five percent of these physicians said that they believe 01:29:34.760 --> 01:29:37.760 that spiritual beliefs can help people get well. 01:29:37.760 --> 01:29:42.760 Seventy-four percent said that they think prayer can work at a distance, 01:29:42.760 --> 01:29:46.760 and fifty-five percent said they had actually seen results 01:29:46.760 --> 01:29:51.760 in their own patients that resembled what they call miracles. 01:29:51.760 --> 01:29:54.760 This is not the picture people have of doctors. 01:29:54.760 --> 01:29:57.760 Here's the explanatory factor here. 01:29:57.760 --> 01:30:00.760 If you ask doctors publicly what they believe, 01:30:00.760 --> 01:30:03.760 they will just deny that this stuff is real. 01:30:03.760 --> 01:30:06.760 But if you ask them anonymously on surveys 01:30:06.760 --> 01:30:09.760 where they do not have to sign their name, 01:30:09.760 --> 01:30:13.760 they will have a completely different picture. 01:30:13.760 --> 01:30:21.760 These are some benches I crafted for meditation sitting circle. 01:30:21.760 --> 01:30:36.760 Music 01:30:36.760 --> 01:30:39.760 I live in a part of the world where the Native American tradition 01:30:39.760 --> 01:30:42.760 is quite strong in northern New Mexico, 01:30:42.760 --> 01:30:46.760 and I've had the opportunity to talk with many Native American healers 01:30:46.760 --> 01:30:52.760 and shamans about what they think about prayer and intentionality, 01:30:52.760 --> 01:30:56.760 and it's taken for granted in their tradition that these things are real. 01:30:56.760 --> 01:31:02.760 They think it quite odd that we have lost touch with this. 01:31:02.760 --> 01:31:05.760 One shaman I asked in the area where I live, 01:31:05.760 --> 01:31:08.760 whether or not she believed in prayer, she said, 01:31:08.760 --> 01:31:11.760 oh, don't ask me that. We don't even have a word for prayer. 01:31:11.760 --> 01:31:15.760 It's just in the air. We don't make anything special out of it. 01:31:15.760 --> 01:31:18.760 You white people want to fancify this 01:31:18.760 --> 01:31:21.760 and make something really special out of prayer. 01:31:21.760 --> 01:31:24.760 It's just the way the world works. 01:31:24.760 --> 01:31:33.760 Music 01:31:33.760 --> 01:31:36.760 We know in modern medicine that many things work, 01:31:36.760 --> 01:31:40.760 although we don't have an understanding of how. 01:31:40.760 --> 01:31:43.760 A classic example is the general anesthetics. 01:31:43.760 --> 01:31:47.760 We don't know how anesthesia really works, but we know that it does, 01:31:47.760 --> 01:31:51.760 so we use it in spite of our ignorance about how it happens. 01:31:51.760 --> 01:31:57.760 We're pretty much the same juncture with healing from a distance. 01:31:57.760 --> 01:32:02.760 Although there are around 20 major hypotheses about how it works, 01:32:02.760 --> 01:32:04.760 there's no consensus. 01:32:04.760 --> 01:32:07.760 But almost all of these hypotheses suggest 01:32:07.760 --> 01:32:10.760 we're going to have to redefine consciousness. 01:32:10.760 --> 01:32:15.760 We're going to have to free it from the brain, from the body, 01:32:15.760 --> 01:32:21.760 and distribute it, what I call, non-locally out there in the world. 01:32:21.760 --> 01:32:29.760 Music 01:32:29.760 --> 01:32:33.760 I know people get troubled by the way we use the term consciousness, 01:32:33.760 --> 01:32:36.760 because it's not properly defined. 01:32:36.760 --> 01:32:42.760 Because sometimes in science you have to allow a term to float in ambiguity, 01:32:42.760 --> 01:32:45.760 and you understand its meaning as you go along, 01:32:45.760 --> 01:32:48.760 and you study how it manifests in the world. 01:32:48.760 --> 01:32:50.760 Then you eventually can define it. 01:32:50.760 --> 01:32:53.760 That's where we are with consciousness. 01:32:53.760 --> 01:32:57.760 This is where you could say, I keep all my attachments. 01:32:57.760 --> 01:33:00.760 All those things I probably don't really need, 01:33:00.760 --> 01:33:03.760 but I keep thinking I'd need them someday. 01:33:03.760 --> 01:33:07.760 By and large, science and spirituality, when they come together at all, 01:33:07.760 --> 01:33:13.760 are kind of dancing around each other, and not directly facing the core issue. 01:33:13.760 --> 01:33:19.760 The core issue is that most scientists are totally married 01:33:19.760 --> 01:33:22.760 to an absolute materialist philosophy of mind, 01:33:22.760 --> 01:33:28.760 which says the mind is nothing but chemical and electrical activity in the brain. 01:33:28.760 --> 01:33:33.760 It doesn't reach out beyond your body, it dies when you die. 01:33:33.760 --> 01:33:37.760 That's why I think it's so important to bring Sai in, okay? 01:33:37.760 --> 01:33:45.760 If materialism is right, and the core basis of spirituality is nonsense, 01:33:45.760 --> 01:33:48.760 the two are never going to help each other. 01:33:48.760 --> 01:33:50.760 It's going to be a continual fight. 01:33:50.760 --> 01:33:54.760 But if, as I see it, when you apply essential science, 01:33:54.760 --> 01:33:57.760 and you discover these Sai phenomena, 01:33:57.760 --> 01:34:01.760 and you find that the mind can reach beyond the body, 01:34:01.760 --> 01:34:04.760 that perhaps it survives death in some form, 01:34:04.760 --> 01:34:09.760 that we can have interconnections that are extremely deep and pervasive, 01:34:09.760 --> 01:34:13.760 that's much more what genuine spirituality is about. 01:34:13.760 --> 01:34:17.760 That's where the marriage between science and spirituality needs to take place. 01:34:17.760 --> 01:34:20.760 I'm trying to build bridges between those people. 01:34:20.760 --> 01:34:22.760 Um... 01:34:22.760 --> 01:34:26.760 Spoon bending is a very interesting phenomena. 01:34:26.760 --> 01:34:29.760 It's a very interesting phenomenon. 01:34:29.760 --> 01:34:31.760 It's a very interesting phenomenon. 01:34:31.760 --> 01:34:33.760 It's a very interesting phenomenon. 01:34:33.760 --> 01:34:35.760 It's a very interesting phenomenon. 01:34:35.760 --> 01:34:37.760 It's a very interesting phenomenon. 01:34:37.760 --> 01:34:39.760 It's a very interesting phenomenon. 01:34:39.760 --> 01:34:41.760 It's a very interesting phenomenon. 01:34:41.760 --> 01:34:43.760 It's a very interesting phenomenon. 01:34:43.760 --> 01:34:45.760 It's a very interesting phenomenon. 01:34:45.760 --> 01:34:47.760 It's a very interesting phenomenon. 01:34:47.760 --> 01:34:50.760 Spoon bending is a very interesting phenomena. 01:34:50.760 --> 01:34:54.760 Because, first of all, there are a lot of people who just do it as a trick. 01:34:54.760 --> 01:34:56.760 But let's eliminate the tricksters. 01:34:56.760 --> 01:34:58.760 Let's eliminate the charlatans. 01:34:58.760 --> 01:35:02.760 And let's talk about the conditions where a person can, for example, 01:35:02.760 --> 01:35:05.760 very gently stroke. 01:35:05.760 --> 01:35:08.760 No force whatsoever, just a gentle stroking. 01:35:08.760 --> 01:35:11.760 And it will be observed to bend. 01:35:11.760 --> 01:35:14.760 And the question is, how does that happen? 01:35:14.760 --> 01:35:23.760 Well, if we remember that any object is 99.9% empty space. 01:35:23.760 --> 01:35:26.760 This is mostly empty space, as is this. 01:35:26.760 --> 01:35:34.760 And what preserves this space is a particular lattice or structure that is held. 01:35:34.760 --> 01:35:38.760 But since this structure is mostly thin air, 01:35:38.760 --> 01:35:40.760 um... 01:35:40.760 --> 01:35:43.760 with the right intention and the right resonance, 01:35:43.760 --> 01:35:47.760 it is possible to then, so to speak, commune with the atoms. 01:35:47.760 --> 01:35:53.760 And therefore get into its resonance so that very little, quote, power 01:35:53.760 --> 01:35:58.760 allows for it to become, if you would, more liquid or more malleable. 01:35:58.760 --> 01:36:02.760 And you can do this with some objects more easily than others. 01:36:02.760 --> 01:36:04.760 But it becomes completely plausible 01:36:04.760 --> 01:36:08.760 once you look at this as a quantum physics phenomenon. 01:36:13.760 --> 01:36:17.760 I know enough about physics to know how little I know about physics. 01:36:17.760 --> 01:36:22.760 And so I know that a lot of the popular New Age writings 01:36:22.760 --> 01:36:28.760 that invoke quantum physics as sort of a rationale for psychic and spiritual things, 01:36:28.760 --> 01:36:30.760 they're really being poetic. 01:36:30.760 --> 01:36:35.760 I mean, it's kind of beautiful in a way, but quantum physics is not poetry. 01:36:35.760 --> 01:36:39.760 Our search for quantum physics is not poetry. 01:36:39.760 --> 01:36:43.760 Our search for truth, are we really going anywhere 01:36:43.760 --> 01:36:46.760 or are we just walking on a treadmill? 01:36:51.760 --> 01:36:56.760 In looking for mechanisms for how the psi operates, 01:36:56.760 --> 01:37:00.760 I can speculate, but it'd be too strong a statement 01:37:00.760 --> 01:37:03.760 to say that I think it's specifically linked 01:37:03.760 --> 01:37:06.760 to, say, zero-point energy or vacuum fluctuation. 01:37:06.760 --> 01:37:10.760 But it's still too early to really understand. 01:37:10.760 --> 01:37:16.760 I mean, even now, we know that dark energy is some 70-plus percent 01:37:16.760 --> 01:37:21.760 of the universe, dark matter appears to be some 20-plus percent of the universe. 01:37:21.760 --> 01:37:26.760 You add it all up, it turns out that 4% of the universe we understand, 01:37:26.760 --> 01:37:30.760 96% of the universe we don't have a clue. 01:37:30.760 --> 01:37:33.760 So facing the dark energy, 01:37:33.760 --> 01:37:35.760 we don't have a clue. 01:37:35.760 --> 01:37:39.760 So facing into that kind of reality, 01:37:39.760 --> 01:37:44.760 one must be very cautious about saying something can't be. 01:37:53.760 --> 01:37:58.760 Imagine that there was no Moses, no Buddha, no Jesus, no Muhammad. 01:37:58.760 --> 01:38:02.760 Imagine there was no Old Testament, no Kabbalah, 01:38:02.760 --> 01:38:04.760 no Testament, no Koran. 01:38:04.760 --> 01:38:09.760 Imagine there were no seers, no prophets, no medicine women or men. 01:38:09.760 --> 01:38:12.760 There was just 21st century science. 01:38:12.760 --> 01:38:16.760 Would science on its own, in its attempt to understand 01:38:16.760 --> 01:38:19.760 the origin and evolution of order in the universe, 01:38:19.760 --> 01:38:22.760 including us and our personal lives, 01:38:22.760 --> 01:38:25.760 would it come to the conclusion that some sort of a guiding, 01:38:25.760 --> 01:38:30.760 organizing, designing process, some sort of a G.O.D. existed? 01:38:30.760 --> 01:38:33.760 And the conclusion that I've come to over 20 years of research, 01:38:33.760 --> 01:38:36.760 beginning at Yale and continuing at the University of Arizona, 01:38:36.760 --> 01:38:38.760 is that the answer is yes. 01:38:38.760 --> 01:38:44.760 And so to be truly comprehensive about what a creative intelligence would mean, 01:38:44.760 --> 01:38:48.760 it would have to be big enough to encompass quantum physics 01:38:48.760 --> 01:38:51.760 and Newtonian physics and string theory 01:38:51.760 --> 01:38:55.760 and all the physics that would subsequently come along. 01:39:00.760 --> 01:39:03.760 We're into mystery and the unknown, 01:39:03.760 --> 01:39:07.760 and so to symbolize that, 01:39:07.760 --> 01:39:10.760 I stenciled one of my favorite sayings, 01:39:10.760 --> 01:39:14.760 something unknown is doing we don't know what. 01:39:14.760 --> 01:39:17.760 This is Sir Arthur Eddington's comment 01:39:17.760 --> 01:39:21.760 about the uncertainty principle in modern physics, 01:39:21.760 --> 01:39:25.760 but I love this comment so much, I apply it to all areas of life. 01:39:25.760 --> 01:39:28.760 It's my favorite article in the book, 01:39:28.760 --> 01:39:31.760 it's my favorite explanation for everything. 01:39:37.760 --> 01:39:43.760 Morphic or zero-point fields, quantum processes in our brain, 01:39:43.760 --> 01:39:49.760 spirit, consciousness, universal energy, G.O.D. 01:39:49.760 --> 01:39:52.760 It seems that our psychic connections are part of a great, 01:39:52.760 --> 01:39:55.760 mysterious mix of energy and information 01:39:55.760 --> 01:39:58.760 that lies at the heart of nature. 01:40:16.760 --> 01:40:19.760 Whatever the budding theories on psychic phenomena, 01:40:19.760 --> 01:40:22.760 I may not have found a proper explanation, 01:40:22.760 --> 01:40:26.760 but that does not mean we don't have these powers. 01:40:27.760 --> 01:40:30.760 Most of the pioneering scientists I met 01:40:30.760 --> 01:40:33.760 challenged the prevailing materialistic worldview 01:40:33.760 --> 01:40:36.760 that our mind is just limited to our brain. 01:40:36.760 --> 01:40:39.760 Their research demonstrates that sometimes 01:40:39.760 --> 01:40:43.760 there is an aspect of our consciousness that transcends space and time, 01:40:43.760 --> 01:40:46.760 that transcends the limits of our physical senses, 01:40:46.760 --> 01:40:49.760 that we can influence our physical world, 01:40:49.760 --> 01:40:52.760 and that we are mysteriously interconnected. 01:41:04.760 --> 01:41:07.760 This journey, prompted by my daughter's dream, 01:41:07.760 --> 01:41:10.760 my father's accident, and the weird spoonbending, 01:41:10.760 --> 01:41:13.760 brought me to a point where I can confidently say 01:41:13.760 --> 01:41:16.760 that I have not been deluding myself. 01:41:16.760 --> 01:41:19.760 The paranormal actually seems normal. 01:41:20.760 --> 01:41:23.760 But still I wonder, did I, in the process, 01:41:23.760 --> 01:41:28.760 just find scientific evidence for our divinity, or for spirit? 01:41:29.760 --> 01:41:33.760 Well, if the mind can sometimes reach out to another mind, 01:41:33.760 --> 01:41:36.760 tell about the state of the world at a distance, 01:41:36.760 --> 01:41:39.760 foresee the future, have a direct influence on matter 01:41:39.760 --> 01:41:42.760 through psychokinesis or heal things, 01:41:42.760 --> 01:41:45.760 to me that sounds a lot like the ideas of a spirit. 01:41:45.760 --> 01:41:48.760 Yeah, that doesn't mean that the Catholics are completely right 01:41:48.760 --> 01:41:51.760 or the Baptists are completely right 01:41:51.760 --> 01:41:54.760 or the Buddhists are something like that, 01:41:54.760 --> 01:41:58.760 but it does mean there is a reality behind spiritual systems 01:41:58.760 --> 01:42:01.760 that very much deserves our attention. 01:42:01.760 --> 01:42:06.760 That's the importance of psychic phenomena and the Big Five. 01:42:12.760 --> 01:42:15.760 What the remote viewer experiences is, I believe, 01:42:15.760 --> 01:42:19.760 exactly what the religious ecstatic experiences 01:42:19.760 --> 01:42:21.760 at the moment of epiphany, 01:42:21.760 --> 01:42:24.760 and it is what the genius experiences 01:42:24.760 --> 01:42:27.760 at the aha moment of creativity. 01:42:27.760 --> 01:42:30.760 What the science does, rather than taking you away from spirituality, 01:42:30.760 --> 01:42:33.760 it takes you towards spirituality. 01:42:33.760 --> 01:42:37.760 And the results show that our intentions matter. 01:42:37.760 --> 01:42:40.760 What we do is we're not just talking about the mind, 01:42:40.760 --> 01:42:43.760 but our intentions matter. 01:42:43.760 --> 01:42:46.760 What we want actually makes the world a little different 01:42:46.760 --> 01:42:49.760 from what it would be. 01:42:49.760 --> 01:42:52.760 It's as though each of our minds 01:42:52.760 --> 01:42:55.760 encompasses the entire universe all the time. 01:42:55.760 --> 01:43:00.760 Like a hologram, this intelligence is expressed everywhere. 01:43:00.760 --> 01:43:04.760 The phrase that I like to use is that the all is in the small. 01:43:04.760 --> 01:43:07.760 With hindsight, we can say, oh, those are the vectors 01:43:07.760 --> 01:43:11.760 that probably cause people to pursue various religious traditions 01:43:11.760 --> 01:43:14.760 or meditation practices or whatever, 01:43:14.760 --> 01:43:17.760 because it's a real phenomenon in the real world. 01:43:17.760 --> 01:43:20.760 Living organisms are organized by invisible fields. 01:43:20.760 --> 01:43:23.760 This seems to be the nature of nature. 01:43:23.760 --> 01:43:27.760 If we have a quality of our consciousness that's nonlocal or infinite 01:43:27.760 --> 01:43:32.760 in space, capable of reaching out through not just space, but time as well, 01:43:32.760 --> 01:43:36.760 that sounds pretty much like the soul to me. 01:43:37.760 --> 01:43:58.760 MUSIC 01:43:58.760 --> 01:44:00.760 Deepak, call me. 01:44:00.760 --> 01:44:05.760 MUSIC 01:44:05.760 --> 01:44:09.760 I'm not answering a question like that on tape, it would get me killed. 01:44:09.760 --> 01:44:14.760 MUSIC 01:44:14.760 --> 01:44:15.760 Man! 01:44:15.760 --> 01:44:17.760 Man! 01:44:17.760 --> 01:44:22.760 MUSIC 01:44:22.760 --> 01:44:25.760 Man, man, man, man. 01:44:25.760 --> 01:44:33.760 MUSIC 01:44:55.760 --> 01:44:59.760 MUSIC
