I had just met Ralph in August. 07:17.400 --> 07:23.400 We were residents together. A mutual friend introduced us. And I remember feeling really, really tired as the night progressed. 07:38.400 --> 07:44.400 I remember getting to the call room, literally almost crawling to the bed. And I was gone. 07:46.400 --> 07:49.400 Next thing I know, my pager went off. 07:49.400 --> 07:52.400 When I tried to get up, I couldn't feel my legs. 07:52.400 --> 07:57.400 Then I stepped down to get help and it suddenly felt like I was stepping on hot coals. 07:58.400 --> 08:02.400 I'm brought to the emergency room and they said we need to do an MRI to see what's going on. 08:03.400 --> 08:07.400 They tell you don't move. And I'm in there for like two hours. 08:10.400 --> 08:13.400 And all I hear is that terrible sound of banging. 08:13.400 --> 08:18.400 And then I start to feel this pain, some like Charlie Horace on steroids. 08:18.400 --> 08:20.400 And I'm terrified. 08:20.400 --> 08:23.400 They keep asking me, are you okay? Are you okay? 08:23.400 --> 08:27.400 And I keep saying yes. And I'm thinking no. 08:27.400 --> 08:34.400 And then as I'm wheeling out, I hear the radiology attending say, go get the medical students, go get the interns. 08:34.400 --> 08:37.400 This is a classic case of MS. 08:43.400 --> 08:47.400 Like the fourth time for one's day, you know, it's just like everything changed overnight. 08:50.400 --> 08:52.400 It was pretty frightening. 08:53.400 --> 09:02.400 It was pretty frightening because we had only been dating for a couple of months, but I was fairly certain that this was the woman I was going to spend the rest of my life with. 09:07.400 --> 09:13.400 I knew it was an autoimmune disease, but the things that were important to me at that moment, I really had no idea. 09:14.400 --> 09:24.400 When the neurologist came, I remember him telling me that, you know, multiple sclerosis is a chronic illness, and you just have to learn to live with it. 09:27.400 --> 09:33.400 Multiple sclerosis is a disease that affects the brain, the spinal cord, and the nerves to the back of the eye. 09:33.400 --> 09:36.400 It's classified as an autoimmune disease. 09:36.400 --> 09:44.400 In the early stages, the immune system is episodically attacking local areas of the central nervous system. 09:45.400 --> 09:52.400 A normal, healthy immune system is supposed to fight off foreign invaders like bacteria, virus, you know, pathogens. 09:53.400 --> 09:58.400 In MS, it attacks myelin, this fatty sheath that protects the spinal cord and nerves. 09:59.400 --> 10:09.400 The consequence of that is the development of these neurological issues, and the progression of the illness would be, you know, becoming dependent, for example, on a wheelchair or on, you know, other things. 10:09.400 --> 10:13.400 Like it affects your bladder, it can cause optic neuritis, even blindness. 10:17.400 --> 10:21.400 I knew there was no cure for MS. The best I could hope for was to slow its progression. 10:22.400 --> 10:26.400 My doctors predicted I'd likely be in a wheelchair within 20 years. 10:27.400 --> 10:31.400 I can tell you those are difficult words to hear when you're 28 years old. 10:34.400 --> 10:40.400 The imaging studies showed a great burden of disease, so it was never a thought that she wasn't going to be on medication. 10:42.400 --> 10:47.400 The first time I had to inject her, it was upsetting. 10:47.400 --> 10:51.400 You know, here I was having to inflict pain on her, and this was going to be our life moving forward. 10:51.400 --> 11:00.400 These nightly injections, which gave her flu-like symptoms, which led to other medications to counteract the side effects of the medications that she was on for the MS. 11:02.400 --> 11:07.400 By the time I was in my early 30s, I was taking about 12 drugs. I had no quality of life. 11:07.400 --> 11:13.400 And then one day, I was sitting in my office, and somebody dropped off a stack of mail. 11:13.400 --> 11:18.400 And there was a journal, and on the cover it said, multiple sclerosis and blueberries. 11:20.400 --> 11:22.400 And I said, what could that be? 11:22.400 --> 11:26.400 There was a study that looked at MS patients, and they bet half of them were diet rich in blueberries. 11:26.400 --> 11:31.400 And the patients who were eating this diet rich in blueberries reported that they felt a little bit better. 11:31.400 --> 11:37.400 Now, it wasn't a great scientific study, but what it did was that aha moment, like wow, diet and disease. 11:37.400 --> 11:41.400 I thought back to all that education that I had had. 11:41.400 --> 11:46.400 Ten years, a decade of my life dedicated to medical education. 11:46.400 --> 11:54.400 And I couldn't think of one example in which any of my professors, mentors ever discussed the connection between diet and disease. 11:54.400 --> 11:57.400 I wanted to look into it myself and do a search. 11:57.400 --> 12:01.400 And I put in words like multiple sclerosis and blueberries, and I said, I'm going to do a search. 12:01.400 --> 12:06.400 And I put in words like multiple sclerosis and diet, chronic disease and diet. 12:06.400 --> 12:10.400 And what I found was extraordinary. 12:10.400 --> 12:14.400 This idea of lifestyle medicine wasn't just powerful for me. 12:14.400 --> 12:17.400 I knew that this was powerful for all of us. 12:17.400 --> 12:22.400 And it was a message that I wanted to share with as many as possible. 12:22.400 --> 12:27.400 So I started to write articles, and I started to do public speaking wherever anybody would invite me. 12:28.400 --> 12:33.400 Such a great pleasure to be here to speak on a topic that I'm immensely passionate about. 12:33.400 --> 12:36.400 I've been practicing medicine for 22 years. 12:36.400 --> 12:39.400 Today, I practice lifestyle medicine. 12:39.400 --> 12:41.400 Has anyone ever heard of that? 12:41.400 --> 12:44.400 It's a relatively new field in medicine. 12:44.400 --> 12:53.400 Lifestyle medicine's focus is to educate and empower patients on the importance of optimal nutrition, a primarily plant-based diet. 12:53.400 --> 13:08.400 Physical activity, stress management, effective sleep hygiene, the avoidance of tobacco, the reduction or near elimination of alcohol, and the importance of social interconnectedness. 13:08.400 --> 13:13.400 The evidence is absolutely overwhelming. 13:14.400 --> 13:30.400 I don't think there's anything more consistently reported in high-quality peer-reviewed journals than the potential of lifestyle to improve the quality of lives for millions upon millions around the globe. 13:34.400 --> 13:37.400 One of the most powerful pieces of evidence. 13:38.400 --> 13:46.400 2009, Erroll Ford and colleagues studied 23,000 adults in and around Potsdam, Germany, and asked them about four factors. 13:46.400 --> 13:48.400 They asked about weight. 13:48.400 --> 13:51.400 They asked, do you smoke, yes or no? Are you physically active, yes or no? 13:51.400 --> 13:53.400 Do you eat well, yes or no? 13:53.400 --> 13:56.400 And their definition of eating well was so simple. 13:56.400 --> 14:00.400 It was habitual intake of vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. 14:00.400 --> 14:12.400 So they compared the people who said, I don't smoke, I eat well, I'm active, my weight is fine, to people who said, I smoke, eat badly, don't exercise, and my weight's out of control. 14:12.400 --> 14:19.400 And these people had an almost 80% lesser rate of developing any major chronic disease. 14:19.400 --> 14:24.400 Did you be with us? 14:24.400 --> 14:27.400 At some point, I had read enough. 14:27.400 --> 14:39.400 And in 2003, I adopted a whole food plant-based diet because the evidence suggested that this was the ideal diet for health maintenance. 14:39.400 --> 14:41.400 I began to exercise. 14:41.400 --> 14:46.400 Back in the 1990s, when you were diagnosed with MS, you were told, don't exercise. 14:46.400 --> 14:49.400 MS patients struggle with fatigue. 14:49.400 --> 14:51.400 You were told to conserve your energy. 14:51.400 --> 14:53.400 So for eight years, I didn't exercise. 14:53.400 --> 14:55.400 I was very deconditioned. 14:55.400 --> 15:01.400 I could not get onto a stationary bike without my husband's assistance. 15:01.400 --> 15:05.400 And the first time I could do a minute, and I was in a lot of pain. 15:05.400 --> 15:08.400 But the next day, I went back. 15:08.400 --> 15:10.400 And it didn't happen in a week, and it didn't happen in a month. 15:10.400 --> 15:13.400 It happened over time, but I started to feel better. 15:13.400 --> 15:15.400 I came off all of those medications. 15:15.400 --> 15:21.400 And on May 2nd, 2010, I crossed the finish line at the New Jersey Narrow Line. 15:30.400 --> 15:32.400 That's amazing. That's incredible. 15:32.400 --> 15:33.400 He's done MS. 15:33.400 --> 15:34.400 I still have MS. 15:34.400 --> 15:35.400 And you know what? 15:35.400 --> 15:40.400 If I stopped doing all the things that I do every single day, I would become symptomatic again. 15:40.400 --> 15:43.400 There's tremendous power in our choices. 15:43.400 --> 15:46.400 That's the message I want to get to all students. 15:46.400 --> 15:50.400 And that's a message that we need to get to our communities, to our patients. 15:54.400 --> 15:59.400 I know firsthand what lifestyle changes can do for someone with chronic illness. 16:00.400 --> 16:04.400 So I've decided to embark on my most ambitious trek yet. 16:04.400 --> 16:09.400 Now, nearly two decades after personally adopting this lifestyle approach, 16:09.400 --> 16:12.400 I'm setting out across the United States to connect some dots. 16:12.400 --> 16:18.400 From the most compelling science-based evidence to the top practices around the country 16:18.400 --> 16:21.400 where physicians are helping their patients make lifestyle changes, 16:21.400 --> 16:24.400 I wanted to hear their struggles and successes. 16:24.400 --> 16:31.400 But most importantly, I wanted to uncover why the field of medicine fails to emphasize prevention and lifestyle 16:31.400 --> 16:35.400 despite the evidence that clearly supports its effectiveness. 16:36.400 --> 16:40.400 The first stop of my journey is here, Ithaca, New York, 16:40.400 --> 16:46.400 to revisit a 1980 study that remains one of the touchstones of lifestyle medicine today, 16:46.400 --> 16:50.400 Dr. T. Colin Campbell's China Study. 16:51.400 --> 16:56.400 In 1980, I decided to go to China and see what we could learn. 16:58.400 --> 17:01.400 This is the real China Study. 17:02.400 --> 17:07.400 We went into their homes and measured exactly what they ate over a three-day period. 17:07.400 --> 17:15.400 This is a total of 6,500 families, 130 villages, 65 counties across China. 17:16.400 --> 17:19.400 We collected blood samples and urine samples. 17:19.400 --> 17:26.400 We had all this information on a total of 367, I call them items of information, 17:27.400 --> 17:30.400 which included about four dozen different kinds of disease rates, 17:30.400 --> 17:33.400 different cancers, heart disease, diabetes, all this kind of stuff. 17:36.400 --> 17:39.400 Rice, vegetables, lots of different kinds of vegetables, by the way. 17:41.400 --> 17:43.400 That's why they were produced locally. 17:45.400 --> 17:51.400 Overall, their consumption of animal protein in China was only one-tenth as we have here. 17:52.400 --> 17:54.400 A huge difference. 17:55.400 --> 17:59.400 And of course, heart disease is almost non-existent in some places in China. 18:00.400 --> 18:05.400 There was one county that we, there was something like 265,000 successive death certificates. 18:05.400 --> 18:07.400 Not one was heart disease. 18:08.400 --> 18:12.400 It seemed very clear that our Western diet was too much of animal foods. 18:12.400 --> 18:18.400 This idea that animal foods correlate with heart disease in particular has actually been field tested. 18:19.400 --> 18:24.400 In the 1960s, North Karelia, Finland had the world's highest rate of heart disease deaths. 18:25.400 --> 18:28.400 The government decided to do something about it. 18:30.400 --> 18:35.400 There was an intervention called the North Karelia Project beginning nearly five decades ago. 18:35.400 --> 18:41.400 There was an intervention called the North Karelia Project beginning nearly five decades ago. 18:42.400 --> 18:46.400 With a focus on preventing smoking, reducing intake of saturated fat, 18:46.400 --> 18:54.400 and shifting from animal foods like meat and processed dairy to more vegetables, fruits, whole grains, beans, lentils, nuts, seeds, fish, and seafood. 18:55.400 --> 19:02.400 And since the initiation of the North Karelia Project, an 82% reduction in coronary disease deaths. 19:02.400 --> 19:06.400 And a 10-year average addition to life expectancy. 19:07.400 --> 19:13.400 You show me anything in all of medicine that has ever achieved anything remotely like that, 19:13.400 --> 19:18.400 that has ever extended life expectancy routinely for an entire population by 10 years. 19:18.400 --> 19:20.400 There is nothing. 19:24.400 --> 19:28.400 At the turn of the century, the average American lived until they were 50 years old. 19:28.400 --> 19:31.400 The government kept on saying, you know, you know, you're going to be a doctor. 19:31.400 --> 19:34.400 The government kept statistics. If you looked at what people were dying of, 19:34.400 --> 19:44.400 it was basically respiratory illnesses like pneumonia, tuberculosis, and waterborne diseases like cholera and dysentery. 19:46.400 --> 19:51.400 And then we got antibiotics. And so all of a sudden we saw people living beyond 50. 19:53.400 --> 19:56.400 But that's when food causes the problem. 20:01.400 --> 20:08.400 Every decade since 1950, we've been eating more fat, more cholesterol, more meat, more sugar, and more calories. 20:08.400 --> 20:12.400 So not surprisingly, we're fatter because we eat too much of everything. 20:19.400 --> 20:23.400 When I was in medical school, I would walk in the hospital. The gift shops sold cigarettes. 20:24.400 --> 20:27.400 I bought my Merit Menthols and my head of surgery by Marlboro's, 20:27.400 --> 20:31.400 and we would light up in the hallway, walking down to the doctor's lounge. 20:31.400 --> 20:36.400 And when you got in there, it was so smoky that you could barely cut it with a knife. 20:40.400 --> 20:47.400 We knew that cigarettes cause cancer, but we also knew that it takes time to get cancer, and if I quit, I'll be okay. 20:47.400 --> 20:50.400 And at some point we realized, now is the time. 20:50.400 --> 20:56.400 We've got to quit, and we've got to get the cigarettes out of the gift shop, in fact, get them out of the whole hospital. 20:56.400 --> 21:01.400 And this was a big decision. And of course, after we made that decision, within two weeks everybody knew it was the right thing. 21:01.400 --> 21:05.400 But that's where we are with food. We know we've got an issue. We know we've got to change. 21:06.400 --> 21:10.400 When I started to learn about the importance of nutrition and lifestyle, 21:10.400 --> 21:19.400 I remember talking to colleagues that were in practice with me and sharing this idea, and I didn't get much support in that arena. 21:19.400 --> 21:23.400 And I started to think, gosh, you know, I can't be the only person who's thinking this way. 21:23.400 --> 21:26.400 So I started to look for other people. 21:26.400 --> 21:34.400 That's when I found the American College of Lifestyle Medicine, and I was like, wow, you know, this is home for me. These are my people. 21:45.400 --> 21:52.400 There's a national conference that occurs once a year, and it brings together like-minded physicians and health professionals. 21:54.400 --> 21:59.400 You make connections, you meet people who understand this is important. 22:05.400 --> 22:11.400 When I came here and I sat in a room full of other physicians who understood this, it was really empowering. 22:16.400 --> 22:21.400 I was elated. And I opened my practice a month after I got back from it. 22:24.400 --> 22:35.400 I opened this practice in 2012, and it was really very scary because I had no patients, and no one really knew what lifestyle medicine was. 22:36.400 --> 22:43.400 And I think a lot of my friends and family members thought I had lost my mind. I just knew it was the right thing for me. 22:44.400 --> 22:49.400 You know, there's no blueprint for this. I'm going to do a really thorough history. Is there a special diet for MS? And if there isn't, it's one diet for all of us. That's the disease process. 31:54.400 --> 31:59.400 The problem in diabetes isn't that you're getting sugar into your body. And it's one medication after another, after another, after another. 32:11.400 --> 32:20.400 And you guarantee your patient will not reverse their diabetes. They are going to be a pill taker for the rest of their life. 32:21.400 --> 32:29.400 I wasn't taught this in medical school. There is a severe nutrition deficiency in education for our physicians. 32:29.400 --> 32:35.400 Most doctors are solely trained on an outdated medical education model. 32:35.400 --> 32:41.400 We learn how to detect disease and then treat with pharmaceuticals, procedures or surgical interventions. 32:41.400 --> 32:46.400 All of these are important, but what we don't learn is how to keep patients healthy. 32:46.400 --> 32:53.400 We are receiving an incomplete education, leaving us ill prepared to care for a country drowning in chronic disease. 32:53.400 --> 32:59.400 Lifestyle medicine was not emphasized when I went to medical school. I had to learn this on my own. 32:59.400 --> 33:04.400 And in large part, our schools continue to fail us. 33:04.400 --> 33:10.400 One in four medical schools have a dedicated nutrition course. 33:10.400 --> 33:23.400 And fewer than a third of medical schools meet the suggested minimum of time spent studying nutrition, which is recommended at 25 hours over four years. 33:23.400 --> 33:31.400 Medical school, I got one lecture, one lecture on nutrition, which I remember the lecturer, she had baked homemade banana bread. 33:31.400 --> 33:38.400 She said, here, here's the healthy fat to put on your bread. And it was some mayonnaise, you know, chemical shit storm. 33:38.400 --> 33:41.400 You know, that was served up. 33:41.400 --> 33:47.400 70% of medical students when they come in think that nutrition is important, that it's relevant. 33:47.400 --> 33:56.400 By the time they finish, it's less than half. So it's like medical school washes away the importance of nutrition. 33:56.400 --> 34:03.400 Growing up here in Newark, you know, there isn't really anyone telling you, hey, you can be a doctor. 34:03.400 --> 34:06.400 So I never really thought it was something I could do. 34:06.400 --> 34:17.400 I joined the Army as a medical lab tech. And I saw how doctors gave wounded troops a chance at life. 34:17.400 --> 34:20.400 I wanted to be able to do that for someone. 34:20.400 --> 34:27.400 Last year I discovered lifestyle medicine. But no one at my school, no one ever heard or talked about this. 34:27.400 --> 34:37.400 So I went to Google and I found Dr. Stancic and I said to myself, I need to meet her. 34:37.400 --> 34:40.400 Hey, how are you? 34:40.400 --> 34:43.400 Long story short, she became my mentor. 34:43.400 --> 34:48.400 Actually, we did a nutritional lecture and it was like this big eye opener. 34:48.400 --> 34:53.400 No one at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School talked about lifestyle medicine. 34:53.400 --> 35:00.400 So we started the Lifestyle Medicine Interest Group August 2015 with a paper sign and a table. 35:00.400 --> 35:07.400 And we held a couple of lectures. Dr. Stancic delivered our first talk and it really inspired a lot of students. 35:07.400 --> 35:15.400 The scientific literature tells us that we can prevent nearly 80% of the chronic illnesses we see today in clinical practice. 35:15.400 --> 35:20.400 What if we had identified this patient early on before that end point occurred? 35:20.400 --> 35:28.400 What if we had given him the tools to understand the importance of his nutrition, the importance of his physical activity? 35:28.400 --> 35:31.400 Could this path have taken a different course? 35:31.400 --> 35:40.400 I just hope I can advocate for Lifestyle and change the lives of patients the way she's changing her patient's lives. 35:40.400 --> 35:49.400 My practice is really unusual. So it's incredibly important that it be accurate. 40:50.400 --> 40:57.400 The dietary guidelines right now still say you should have dairy products every day. 40:57.400 --> 41:04.400 Despite the fact that dairy products are the number one source of bad fat, that saturated fat, they're still too friendly to meat. 41:04.400 --> 41:09.400 Especially the processed meats like bacon or ham that are clearly linked to colon cancer. 41:09.400 --> 41:13.400 We've got to be tough on those foods and stop pushing them. 41:21.400 --> 41:27.400 The USDA actually operates in partnership to promote the consumption of animal food. 41:27.400 --> 41:34.400 For example, there's a dairy checkoff program where dairy farmers in the United States pay a certain number of pennies per pound. 41:35.400 --> 41:42.400 It goes into a fund and then the USDA administers it and goes out and forms partnerships to help promote dairy. 41:42.400 --> 41:52.400 They partnered with Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, to come up with new items on the menu that have cheese or to add more cheese to various items. 41:54.400 --> 41:58.400 This is an institutional conflict of interest that can never be resolved. 41:58.400 --> 42:08.400 Over here you're helping farmers. Then over here, if you really did the right thing, you might tell people not to buy so much of something that these people who you're advocating for produce. 42:08.400 --> 42:10.400 And it can never be reconciled. 42:12.400 --> 42:18.400 It takes years to move government. So now we're trying to move that conversation, which is longer overdue. 42:18.400 --> 42:22.400 But this is going to be hard. We got ourselves into quite a bind here. 42:22.400 --> 42:26.400 And it's going to take a lot of work and effort to get us out of it. 42:29.400 --> 42:35.400 Forty years ago, medicine recognized that cardiovascular disease was the leading cause of death in this country. 42:35.400 --> 42:38.400 Today, forty years later, still the same. 42:40.400 --> 42:43.400 So we look at that and we say to ourselves, can't we do better? 42:43.400 --> 42:54.400 I do this five and a half hour intensive seminar where people become aware that food is their salvation or it can also be their destiny to an early grave. 42:54.400 --> 42:59.400 When you have a pizza or a cheeseburger, the first thing that happens in your bloodstream... 42:59.400 --> 43:03.400 A chronic illness doesn't occur when you have a cheeseburger. 43:03.400 --> 43:10.400 But you do take a hit. Of that hit, your body recovers, let's say, ninety percent. 43:10.400 --> 43:16.400 But you're left with a little ten percent injury. Does it make any difference in your blood pressure? It's a good thing. 51:16.260 --> 51:22.260 Lifestyle won't help every kind of cancer, but lifestyle changes can reduce your risk 51:22.260 --> 51:27.260 for some of the most prevalent, such as colon, prostate, and breast cancer. 51:34.260 --> 51:41.260 They found a small lump. I've been doing breast cancer surgery for 15 years. 51:45.260 --> 51:52.260 I don't think that women realize that diet, exercise, obesity actually have an impact 51:56.260 --> 52:03.260 on their developing breast cancer. Most women, when I talk to them about that, it's the 52:03.260 --> 52:09.260 first time they've heard it, and it's frankly a big surprise to them to hear that those 52:09.260 --> 52:13.260 life choices made an impact into their breast cancer. 52:15.260 --> 52:22.260 One in four cancers diagnosed in women in the world is breast cancer. So this is, in 52:22.260 --> 52:29.260 fact, a global problem. And so we've looked at a number of lifestyle factors, such as 52:29.260 --> 52:38.260 physical activity, protected for particularly premenopausal breast cancer, alcohol, clearly 52:38.260 --> 52:45.260 increasing risk, high fruits and vegetables, high fiber, protected against breast cancer. 52:48.260 --> 52:55.260 Avoiding weight gain through premenopausal use reduces risk of breast cancer. 52:57.260 --> 53:03.260 How much of a reduction in risk do you think potentially we could reap from adopting this behavior? 53:03.260 --> 53:09.260 Part of the answer is, when do we start? If we start with our daughters or our nieces 53:09.260 --> 53:15.260 or our grandchildren, we could have a really big impact on premenopausal breast cancer. 53:15.260 --> 53:23.260 With that healthy diet from let's say age 10 or 12, on high physical activity, limited 53:23.260 --> 53:31.260 alcohol, where over 50%, over half of premenopausal breast cancer could be avoided. 53:32.260 --> 53:41.260 The factors outside that affect the epigenome are diet, alcohol is a big one, air pollution, 53:41.260 --> 53:47.260 water pollution, too much sunlight can lead to mutations. So really almost everything 53:47.260 --> 53:52.260 that's coming in. Now, when we get into stress, it gets a little complicated. A little bit 53:52.260 --> 53:59.260 of stress is protective to the epigenome. So that's actually what exercise does. It stresses 54:00.260 --> 54:07.260 our cells a little bit, and that brings in repair mechanisms that keep our genomes pristine. 54:08.260 --> 54:14.260 But too much stress can lead to mutational errors. Too much stress is bad. 54:16.260 --> 54:21.260 Let's talk about inflammation. When we live in a pro-inflammatory environment, we turn 54:21.260 --> 54:23.260 on the bad genes. 54:24.260 --> 54:30.260 Inflammation is a common denominator among many of my patients with autoimmune diseases. 54:31.260 --> 54:41.260 I am a general surgeon, and I had been dealing with ulcerative colitis ever since I was 54:41.260 --> 54:46.260 at the end of my residency. Every single colonoscopy I had, there was always an element 54:46.260 --> 54:54.260 of inflammation on the scope. Last year, my ankles were swelling. So I had my heart 54:54.260 --> 54:59.260 checked out, and everything was fine. And what affects our microbiome? Our diet. 56:06.260 --> 56:13.260 The microbiome refers to a whole host of organisms that live on in and around us. Fungi, bacteria, 56:13.260 --> 56:18.260 protozoa, yeast. We used to think they were pretty insignificant, but they dictate our 56:18.260 --> 56:24.260 overall health. When you eat an unhealthy diet, your microbiome gets altered. You enter 56:24.260 --> 56:29.260 a state called dysbiosis, where you have bacteria that may not be so healthy for you that are 56:29.260 --> 56:33.260 overgrown in relation to the healthy bacteria. They produce chemicals, and oftentimes these 56:33.260 --> 56:38.260 chemicals are carcinogenic and really mess with our immune system. So the unhealthy gut 56:38.260 --> 56:44.260 microbiome corresponds with many autoimmune diseases. If you were to ask me to summarize 56:44.260 --> 56:49.260 how to get a healthy microbiome in one word, it would be fiber. Americans are so fiber 56:49.260 --> 56:56.260 depleted. That should be the headline in the paper. There should be a fiber diet, because 56:56.260 --> 57:02.260 most people are getting about 15 grams a day, but they need anywhere from 26 to 30 57:02.260 --> 57:07.260 grams a day. Fiber only exists in plant foods, and there's a lot of research out there now. 57:07.260 --> 57:13.260 People on plant-based diets tend to have better gut flora. Lifestyle and plant-based eating 57:13.260 --> 57:18.260 is an important aspect in not only preventing disease, but it's going to be very important 57:18.260 --> 57:24.260 in managing the spectrum of autoimmunity. Because think about how we treat autoimmunity 57:24.260 --> 57:31.260 now. We treat autoimmune disease with a drug that knocks out your immune system. And when 57:31.260 --> 57:37.260 we do that, yep, maybe we cool off that autoimmune disease, but we're also doing collateral 57:37.260 --> 57:43.260 damage. Our immune system is important. There's a lot of little bits of light that we're 57:43.260 --> 57:47.260 starting to see. We now just have to connect these dots. 57:48.260 --> 57:54.260 Almost as important as what we eat is how we move.
